I've used the Asurion insurance plan with many devices in the past. Since I didn't care about my Blackberry 9650 anymore I cut off the insurance 6 months ago because I figured if it broke or I lost it I still had another spare BB 9630 to use for a replacement.
But they started out at $4 a month with a $50 deductible. Now it's an $89 deductible and you can only use it twice a year or $178 if you used it twice . . . yikes!
A few years ago as phone prices rose they upped the monthly cost to $8.
This is $96 a year or $192 for the life of the 2 year plan!
Now VZ has no more new every two one can expect to pay like $96 a year and beyond if you expect to keep the phone longer. And these newer devices are more prone to breaking easier as they are made lighter, but cheaper and with bigger screens.
Over the years I've used the plan to replace probably 3 or 4 BB's with refurbs so any of these electronic devices are prone to screwing up and having to be replaced. I've also toasted a few because I boat a lot and even though I keep it in a zip lock just being around the water can damage a device easily.
So now VZ also offers an extended warranty over the 12 months for replacement for $1.99 a month.
But this does not cover user damage (like dropping it) or water damage.
Without full coverage I worry about buying a replacement device especially 4G because so many of the first phones out there have awful battery life and those are sure to be dumped on Craigslist.
So what are most Charge users doing about coverage. With a screen this big, I know it's "Gorilla" glass but I'm sure it too, will break easily enough if dropped.
I don't like cases because they increase the bulk of the device (I pocket it).
A skin will prevent me from using the 2 docks (they each come with an OEM battery) and a vehicle mount I just ordered, so now that I will have plenty of extra power which was what was worrying me about keeping the Charge beyond the 14 days.
I have not found the Charge to be overly power hungry (but I don't have 4G in my area yet) so I really like the phone now that I've played around with all it's features over the past week and it's definetly now a keeper.
But my bottom line is the charge is a lot bigger than my BB's and it's made a little on the flimsy side to keep it's weight down (the BB is built like a Tank). As an example the Charge's battery door is really flimsy (it might be strong) but I still worry about removing it too many times to change out the battery or get at the SD card. I'm sure those plastic tabs holding the door on are going to wear.
I'm sure having to pay retail for another Charge won't be $569, as it ages the price will drop. I tend to change devices every two years anyway.
So what's everyone doing about insurance (those who don't get it need not reply to save on posts).
I'm only interested in how many of us are taking the insurance and are you taking the $1.99 or $6.99 per month Asurion coverage?
Thx
