Never ever an HTC again

A few weeks ago my HTC 10 main camera could not work on autofocus any more. Since there was warranty left I contacted the service agent, and after some doubt I sent in the HTC 10.

Today, five days later, I received an answer from the service agent (see below).

Vi kan dessvärre ej reparera din enhet mot tillverkarens garanti. Vid undersökningen av enheten upptäcktes det att enhetens display är fuktskadad. Vid en fuktskada bortfaller dessvärre all garanti ifrån hela enheten, Vi har istället skickat dig ett kostnadsförslag. Kostnadsförslaget avser byte av display och kamera.

And in English:
Unfortunately, we can not repair your device against the manufacturer's warranty. Upon examination of the device, it was discovered that the display of the device is moisture damaged. In case of a moisture damage, unfortunately, all warranty goes away from the whole unit. We have sent you a cost proposal instead. The cost refers to the change of display and camera.

So they want 300 USD to repair a telephone that has not been close to water. The only humidity I can think of is that I've had the telephone in my breast pocket when I worked in the garden (listening to pod programs).

This is pure and simple bad design. Shame on HTC!

I would still attempt to get them to handle this as a warranty. Be firm and polite. Perhaps even call. Keep at it. My brother was able to get HP to provide him with a new display for his laptop, based on a design hinge defect. They at first told him it was physical damage so no coverage and they wanted 400 US to fix it. He appealed to them and explained that yes while it WAS physical; it was also the fault of a poorly designed hinge. Since the hinge did not secure the laptop closed, a drop had occurred. They ruled in his favor and repaired it under warranty. Give it another shot, can't hurt!
