My phone is unrooted but the bootloader is unlocked. I have the previous 4.0.4 already installed through Odin.

I seen that on other phones and tablets that you can install updates by putting an update a zip on the SD card and going into download mode and pressing a combination of hardware buttons to update the device, which allowed them to keep all the data and settings that was already on the device.

Is there anyway I can do this with my NS4G? If I do the Odin method with the new 4.0.4 update I will loose all the data on my phone again, I also heard that the fastboot method wipes the phone as well.

If your boot loader is already unlocked you have options.

1. You can flash CWM recovery using Fastboot, then use Titanium or My Backup Root to save your important apps & data.

2. You can use AC's own Jerry Hildenbrand's "Backup Wonder Machine" for ICS and Windows Users. It will backup your data, etc. and you can update to 4.0.4 however you like and then restore the backup :) No root required.

Let us know how you would like to proceed.

i was going to take option 2 and use the BWM, but im never home long enough to where i can actually wait for it to fully back up successfully, it usually take 2.5-3 hours to back up completely, unfortunately :-\

i might just have to bite the bullet and root again, i was trying to avoid this because my power button isnt put in properly and i have to get sprint to fix this :(

flashboot, we meet again......

The BWM does take a little longer if you have alot of data on your sdcard. When mine was stripped down to the basics I did a backup in about 15-20 mins and restore about the same time.

Here's the fastboot thread if you like

So I did a combination of things. I already have my NS4G bootloader unlocked, so I used your fastboot method to install CWM and superuser....

AMAZING by the way, it was very quick and simple, love it :)

I then looked at THIS thread for the 4.0.4 leak, I downloaded the odexed version and used gitit20's advice to flash the rom as an update...

Hey guys just rename the downloaded rom file to update.zip throw it in the root of your sd card drive and use CWM to flash update from sd card worked 100% did not have to wipe it out to install just wanted to share this with you folks. Thank you superpaul627g :)

This made it so it acted as an OTA update, it also retained ALL data(apps & games), settings, alarms, apps, and homescreen setups. then after that i flashed face unlock. Now i'm happier than ever! its tunning sooooo smooth and so far i havent encountered proximity issues and google maps locks on to my location 3x faster than has the whole time i had this phone. :)

So yup! Thanks once again Paul627g and thank you gitit20 for your helpful advice :D
