I started with a Samsung Intercept from Virgin Mobile, around the last week of May, 2011. The system looked great, but the phone was not so good. The damned thing was so buggy, even after I had it upgraded to Froyo. I sent it back to the seller for a refund, and spent that money on a LG Optimus V. Now it's a much smoother experience.
Coming from a modest Linux background, I knew that when I wanted to get my first smartphone, it had to be one from the Android camp. I explored the idea early this year, after a discussion about it over Christmas break with my brothers when we were discussing smartphones. (My previous phones, both with AT&T, were two Motorolas. One flip phone, and one feature phone, a QA1 Karma, which I actually liked a lot.)
I also searched for a no-contract plan. I waited a few months, until the termination fee from a 2 year contract with AT&T was more manageable (about $85 for me). Virgin Mobile had what I wanted when I finally settled with them around late May. I do know that they have the upcoming Motorola Triumph busting out this summer, but I'm very happy with my V. I'll probably upgrade if they ever consider putting on 4G service. I wouldn't mind paying an extra $5-10 for 4G, as long as VM keeps the price for their smartphone plans where they are now.
For the moment, I'm fine with not rooting the phone. It works well, and does what I want so why mess with it too much? I'm happy with the apps I have on it now. The only accessory I'd consider (other than the Body Glove case + ZAGG shield coming in the mail) for my V is maybe a keyboard for longer writing sessions (for when I'm on vacation and don't have my laptop with me). Or... if someone could program a flash bulb unit for the camera via USB, but this isn't a big deal, as I have a DSLR (Pentax K-x), and a couple of Canon A PowerShots with full manual control.
