New NookColor - questions

First, i have read most of the stickies, and skimmed through the forum first two pages of posts. :) I am picking up a NookColor on the way home from work today, and I want to use it as a low end tablet. So if I have understood what I read I have options.

Side Note: I have a Nexus One running Stock GB, so I am well versed with Android already. Never had a need to root the phone though.

1) CM7 - Gingerbread based custom rom. This is the most attractive right now as it seems like it offers basically a tweaked version of what I use on my phone. I should, I hope, be able to use most of my everyday apps with it.

2) NookieFroyo - A step back from what I have on my phone, but there really was not much to brag about in GB really.

3) Stock Rooted. This to me seems almost like the least desirable as it sounds like less app support?

4) HC - sounds buggy at this stage, not sure I want to be bothered :)

So... questions..

1) I saw some complaints that even with a class 10 card, booting the OS from an SD is sluggish? How bad is it really?
2) Assuming I leave base as stock rooted, and SD as ummm say CM7, can they share data, I.E. App Settings, Google accounts, etc?
3) Is there any good reason to keep the rooted stock on the NookColor, instead of just put CM7/etc on the internal flash?

Thanks!

Couple of quick answers for you:

CM7 on an SD card is sweet, but very dependent on the particular SD card you are using. Mine was so slow as to be unusable on a Kingston 4GB class 4 card, but runs great on a Patriot 8GB class 10. There is a thread somewhere, either here or at xda-developers that has a chart of various brands and types of SD cards, and their performance with the NC.

I ran rooted stock for quite a while, and that ran very smooth. I like CM7 better, though. Right now I have non-rooted stock internal, and CM7 on a bootable SD card. I run CM7 almost all the time except when in a B&N store. I wasn't able to get the in-store features working with rooted stock, and of course they don't work at all with CM7.

Wait... you can run cm7 on SD with out rooting the NookColor??? I missed that piece of info somehow. How do I do that? Just make the uSD card, insert it and go?

Got CM7 running on the NookColor via a 8gb sandisk card. Works very well, but even though instructions to install all the Google Apps, I do not see the Gmail app. Not sure what I did wrong?

Nevermind, I did not think to look in the market. Found it there and got it working!

Yuppers. I bought such a SD card on ebay, CM7. cost less than $30 on a 4GB card. just after I bought it the seller was shut down by ebay--someone griped, maybe B&N?

Remove the card, and it's a real NC. Stick the card back in (turn the device OFF first <G>) and you have a wireless tablet without bluetooth, GPS, accelerometer, gyro, a phone number (all carrier network tablets have a phone number even though you can't use them as a phone, not even for texting), or several other things. You do have email/gmail, android market, the android browser (far nicer than the present nook browser), and such. You can even install apps that cannot work...like GPS or texting softwares<G>)

Running on the card you cannot access the NC's internal storage...like your library. So it might be best to get a larger card if the choice is available.

Running as a tablet you can use the nook and kindle apps for reading (but the kindle one is harder to use since it covers the whole screen and you don't have access to its controls). I'm not sure if, running as a nook, you can access any books on the card...haven't tried, actually. The actual nook reader is better than the android version of the nook app. imho. So i switch back and forth as needed.

the rubber plug that covers the sd card port will fit on there even when the card is popped out, retaining the card in place. At least for now.<G>

Unless you want the e-reader ability, i see no reason to run off an SD card. But I'm on CM7 on emmc, the latest video-test build with the overclocked kernel set to 1.1 and it's really awesome
I just got my nook a week ago and i wasn't THAT pleased due to the audio-sync being off a tad on videos, and other little things like the touch screen bugging out
BUT, recalibrating the touch screen made the crazy keyboard situation go away, the overclocking made my nook faster than my fascinate, and the video fix is pretty much all but done and now this thing is a beast.
I think u're getting one at the right time... the CM7 nightly builds are pretty stable right now with almost everything working. Once some of the mods and other little tweaks are incorporated, that's probably gonna be the go to ROM on this device. (or phiremod's custom build off CM)

BTW, if you want more info on the CM stuff, you should visit XDA... I love AC, don't get me wrong, but when it came to the NC, I had a lot more difficulty following the directions here than there... ALSO, the main reason for me going CM route was that I'm used to flashing via CWM, never really needed ADB. I had some problems getting ADB up and running to get market and other google apps. But CM7 has a flashable gapps package, never need ADB.

Just flashed CM7 (the video update) onto my Nook. One thing I noticed right away is the phone and camera apps are still there. Is there a way to delete these? I don't need them there. Thanks
