New phone and updates?

Hello all, I was curious....if I buy a new phone from a carrier, but they are just now releasing the Android 2.1 update, will the phone come from the carrier with 2.1 on it, or will I have to update it as if I've owned it for awhile? Does that make sense?

I would say it depends on how long the phone had been sitting in the back room of the store. But if the phone has an update I would also think that when you bought the phone that the salesperson would do the update for you if you did not want to bother as part of the orignal setup of the phone.
