New phone: HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4, or Moto X?

I'm getting my 15 year old son a smart phone for Christmas. I'm currently looking at the HTC One, the Samsung Galaxy S4, and the Moto X. I just can't decide on which one to get. Are there any other phones I should look at? (I refuse to buy an iPhone; can't stand Apple products.)
He got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 for his birthday, so I think he'll feel more comfortable with the S4. I have an HTC Droid DNA that I love, so for myself I probably would be getting the HTC One. I want the present to be a surprise so I don't wanna ask him ...

Also, I plan on looking for the phone during the Black Friday sales; can I buy one then but not activate until Christmas?

It depends. What size phone does he like? What will it be used the most for? Ive got the moto x, htc one and nexus 5. If I had to only keep one, it would probably be the moto x. Form factor is Great. Thing is buttery smooth. Obviously some serious software optimization going on here. Plus active display / notifications rock.

HTC one is also a great device. I consider it the best media consumption phone on the market. Nothing compares in that regard.

The s4 is also a solid choice if he is already using touxhwiz

A lot depends on personal preference. I love my note 3, but I realize it is a bit big for some people.

If you buy of contract, you can keep our unactivated indefinitely. If you are buying it on contract then you will have to activate the phone. I don't know the time frame but certainly not 1 month. Also keep in mind that the contract is locked after 14 days, so you won't be able to switch to a different phone

If price is a consideration, and since HTC One is one of your choices, I'd look at the LG G2. I would personally choose the G2. Android 4.4 (KitKat) will be on the G2 in a few weeks, and I would be ok with that.

Also, while I also like and own the Note 3, I stress that big phones are personal preference. But the G2 is a nice phone and I would have been ok owning that as a phone, if I didn't get into the Notes.

I would also second the Moto X, pretty much because of the size. And with Verizon getting Moto Maker then that would be a nice option as well. I don't know how large his hands are, but I would say with a more compact device, it would be less likely to be dropped (in theory).

With a Moto Maker order, you would also kind of push out the date of activation as it must be shipped to you.

I can't personally confirm it, but the Moto X I saw on Verizon was $49.99. If the SLICK50 deal is still in effect, that phone is free. Can someone confirm that the promo code is still good?

(Reason I can't confirm it is because I used an upgrade to get iGarbage to sell...they had they the 32GB Gold 5s, and with what it is going for on Swappa and eBay, I could use that cash right now...) I can't even pretend-order until I receive the iPhone and put dumb phone back on my line.

The one thing I did like about the Moto X was I was able to use my fraternity's colors as a back cover and accent...with the standard black front face...plus it would engrave my name. That was pretty cool. :)

Thanks to everybody that replied!
I took a closer look at the Moto X and really like the option to personalize the phone and of course the price, at $50 it's the cheapest one.

Since it looks like I'll have to wait until it's closer to Christmas, I'll have more time to decide.
He'll probably use the phone as a music player and to play games the most. What would be the best choice for that? And I would like one about the size of my Droid DNA or maybe a little smaller, but not as small as an iPhone. It should also have a decent amount of storage space or the option to add an SD card. And I love the wireless charging option of my Droid DNA.

I don't think moto x has sd slot, if that's required, you may need a gs4.

I would say the pick would be between the Moto X and the LG G2. The G2 is one of the newer phones out there, compared to the others you listed, except the X. I assume you plan on him keep this through the 2 year term, and so the newer the better it should last. I like both phones, the G2 performance wise is slightly better, and has a good camera on it. Watch for some pricing deals, especially with black friday coming up. I know they just had a special last weekend on the G2, and it was 50 with a new 2 year agreement.

HTC One 100%! But I'd still tell you to go to the store amd try them all out to see what you like best. Really depends on your needs.

Well right now, there's a promo code to get the Moto X for free, and not sure how long Verizon will do the $50 price.

As for games, really the Moto X is capable of doing games just as well as the S4 or One. I know benchmarks are iffy, but it benchmarks slightly higher than the S4 or One when it comes to graphics. Part of that is due to the smaller, 720p screen. As for music, the One will have better external output, but I would assume he would be using headphones. With KitKat coming to the Moto X soon, battery life will also be improved when listening to music than it is now on Jelly Bean.

The Moto X is definitely the smallest right now, but if you are looking for a larger device, then I'd probably would just go with the G2. You get a lot of bang for your buck with that, and performance will be better than the other devices mentioned. It's smaller overall than the DNA (well, thinner and shorter) with a larger screen. You don't have an SD card, but it'll have plenty of storage on board already. I believe LG also included some audio-enhancing software as well. You also get the wireless charging.

I'd choose the Moto X over those two phones.
