New phone, planning on rooting

Just a few questions...

Is there a big difference between the gingerbreak and rageagainstthecage rooting utilities?

When entering recovery mode, is the options to wipe directories located there or do you need to do this from an adb shell? (Can't test myself as I expect the phone to arrive tomorrow)

I was reading through the stickies, and can't exactly figure out how to create a recovery, what it is backing up, and how to actually use the recovery if something goes wrong. A better explanation would really help me out. Will be reading more.

Not sure what the difference is between gingerbreak and rageagainstthecage but when i first rooted my phone all i did was put the gingerbreak apk on my phone, install it and hit root. Once you root your phone you need to flash a custom recovery because the stock recovery doesnt allow to flash custom roms. If i were you i would flash Xionia CWMA recovery because i havent had any problems yet with it. Backing up means you can back up your current rom so if you flash a new rom and something goes wrong you can just go back into recovery and restore your old backup, if you dont know already you go into recovery by holding home button, volume down key and power button at the same time till the lg screen flashes then let go. Let me know if you need anymore help.

Sorry i forgot about wiping /data /cache /boot and /system, While in recovery on the main screen there is a choice to Wipe data/factory reset so you want to scroll down using the volume down key and click that using the camera button on the side, then there is another option below it which is Wipe cache partition and click that , then scroll down more to advanced and click it and scroll down and click Wipe dalvik cache, now go back by pressing the power button once and scroll down to mounts and storage and click it and then from there you can format /boot and /system. Now hit power button once and then you can scroll down and click install zip from sdcard, and click choose zip from sdcard, once you click that it will bring up the contents of you sdcard and then you would click on the custom rom that you should of put on it. once the rom is completely flashed go back and hit reboot system now. Let me know if you need anymore help

Definitely recommend Xionia for the custom recovery and CyanogenMod (Drew's) for the custom ROM! I used those and LOVED them.

I hope you get it working, if not I'm more than willing to help as I know that phone quite well now lol

How do you use ddms when its just a batch file.

So I found out that I'll be on credos service. Are there certain things I need to do to root it on their plan? I know that they set up an ID specific to their company on the phone.

You'll be able to root it just fine. But you WILL have issues running a custom ROM. It can be done, but probably won't be a one-click process.

Rage is a older method of rooting and may not work on the VD where as Gingerbreak was made for rooting VD.

So I decided not to run with the optimus at the last second. A friend had a Nexus S 4G and apparently it has a lot better reception and works with Cyanogen without other modifications made to it.
