New Phone - watch no longer get notifications for incoming calls

HI ALL,

I haven't been to this forum for quite a while but since I bought a new phone I'm having some problems. First the new phone would not pair with the ZW2 and it couldn't even find it. Long story short it seems you have to go into the ZW2's settings and use "Unpair with phone and reset." This causes a factory reset but once its done the new phone found it immediately and then the watch updated.

So its basically working and I get notifications on the watch if e-mail comes in. But I'm not getting any kind of reaction on the watch with incoming calls. With the old phone it would still ring but then there would be a notification on the watch where you could refuse the call or accept it. If you accept it you had to use the phone itself to speak.

But I'm getting nothing on the watch for incoming calls. Is there some option somewhere that I need to set? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gerry

I would look into your Bluetooth settings and make sure you have the watch enabled as a headset. This has to be enabled for you to receive phone calls on the watch.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not familiar with that setting for a Zenwatch 2. Could you point me in the right direction to check that setting?

Thanks,
Gerry

It should be in your phones settings actually. So I would go to the Bluetooth settings on your phone, and then tap on the Zenwatch settings and make sure that the option for phone audio is checked or turned on.

After the Feb patch on my pixel xl, I had to re add?? My ZenWatch 2, to my trusted devices list in order to reestablish connection

Thanks! I'll give it a try although I've been in the phone's BT settings and don't recall those settings, but I'm not that sure. I'll post what I find.

So I turned on my phone and ZW2 and connected them and went into the BT settings for the ZW2 but the only options were to rename the device and unpair. There was no setting to say it was a handset or anything like that.

The ZW2 does not have a speaker so it cannot actually support a call. But in the past with my old phone when a call came in the phone would ring but the ZW2 would also vibrate and show a screen with a green circle with a check in it and if you scrolled one way a red circle with an X in it. If you tapped the red circle the call would be dismissed. If you tapped the green circle the call would be answered but you would have to use the phone to actually talk and hear the call.

My old phone was an LG Volt running Android 4 (Kit Kat) and the above operation with calls worked. My new phone is a Sammy J7 running Android 6 (Marshmallow) and while the notifications on the watch from received e-mails DO work, the operation with incoming calls does NOT work!

Thanks,
Gerry

Ah, you have the smaller device? I have the bigger one and mine actually does have a speaker so it supports phone calls. So for me, enabling headset worked. I should have asked which device you had first. I'll look and see if I can find any settings that can change that though. My wife has the small one.

Hi Jaycemiskel,

Thanks so much for all your help!

I tried the larger one and it was too big for my wrist so I got the smaller one and it fits quite nicely. I would have liked to be able to talk on a call through the watch but being able to dismiss a call or accept it was good enough. And as I said before it worked fine with my old phone and older Android version but with the new phone and Android version no joy!!

Thanks again,
Gerry

No problem! Yeah I've got a big wrist lol. So I can't find any particular setting. Have you tried going into the Android wear app, tapping settings, and then making sure the phone app isn't blocked? That's the last thing I can think of except maybe factory resetting the watch.

Hi Jaycemiskel,

I'll double check that but I am getting watch notifications for e-mails that the phone receives so I don't think the phone app is blocked.

As far as factory resetting it turns out I had to do that for the watch to pair with the new phone. Initially I had nothing but trouble pairing the new phone with the watch and went into all the Bluetooth settings I could find on both devices and neither would "see" the other. But the phone saw any other device. I finally found a setting in the watch celled "Unpair Phone" and went into it and it said it would unpair the current phone AND do a factory reset. I wasn't too keen on doing the reset but I had no choice so I did it. Once it came back up it paired with the new phone instantly! And then the watch updated itself twice and its been connecting with the new phone since then with no problem. And again it gets mail notification but nothing happens when a call comes in.

I can live with it as is because I don't really get very many phone calls but I still would like it to work like before. I'll see if Asus has a support page where you can ask questions and see what they say.

THANKS AGAIN for all your help,
Gerry

With Android wear, specific apps can be blocked so just because you're getting notifications for emails doesn't mean that somehow the phone app isn't blocked. If you go to settings in the android wear app you might just want to double check that it isn't blocked. Hopefully Asus can figure out what's wrong though.

I had to toggle on Play phone voice call on watch in the Bluetooth setting of the watch to receive call notifications.
