PRL = Preferred Roaming List, thanks guys, but I don't roam alot, so what does it actually do?

"This allows the phone to choose the best roaming carriers, particularly "roaming partners" with whom the home carrier has a cost-saving roaming agreement, rather than using non-affiliated carriers. PRL files can also be used to identify home networks along with roaming partners, thus making the PRL an actual list that determines the total coverage of the subscriber, both home and roaming coverage"

thank you, although i'm still not sure what all that means. I have free roaming, so i guess none of that matters.

Sometimes updating is bad. There are there are networks removed and nothing added for an area leaving huge holes with no coverage. Sometimes they change it do you are roaming on 1x instead of 3g. Soon it maybe an issue when the big V roles out lte.

But most of the time a new PRL will add roaming capability; as least when it is a Sprint PRL.

Sprint allows roaming on nearly all CDMA networks in the US so even when you are in a Sprint market you can roam to US Cellular, Verizon, etc. And in many cases you can roam on EVDO as well! New PRLs often included added EVDO roaming agreements and expanded roaming on new networks/partners.

PRL Updating on HTC EVO

Is there a reported issue with the PRL Updating tool - in that it tells you your PRL was updated when in fact it is the same one you had? I have experienced this many times - checking the version before I update and then looking at it again afterwards - but the phone reports the same version even though it said "PRL updated".

The good news was that there was a real update - going from 60671 to 60672.

Also, BTW: I always run the PRL update especially before I leave my home area. There are usually improvements - in terms of more towers and better reception - especially in rural areas. If you live or drive through a known deadspot area, the PRL update can fix that if there is a new tower/equipment for that area. For one of the posters who wondered about the necessity of PRL updating, my take is that "free roaming" only means that you will not charged for roaming; it does not mean that you will actually get "service" or a "quality connection". Thus, PRL updates can be very useful.

Thanks for the info on 60672!
