Hey all I apologize if this has come up before but it has been making me crazy searching the forum. So background on the issue, I had Samsung Galaxy S3 that quit charging, I dont know what software version it had or anything on it. All I know is that in the plain old contacts list that came with the phone I could set different notification sounds for txt messages just like you can ringtones. No app or anything just regular contact list. I had them set for 5 different people. So anyway, old phone breaks they send me a replacement I get all my contacts downloaded go to set notification sounds and ring tones and its not an option. Ringtones is there but not notification. I call Verizon and they basically tell me that I must have been mistaken, uhh when people texted me I got different sound, not mistaken. As far as I know no apps over write the base contact list....am I wrong? Anyone know what happened or if I had a newer Android version somehow? Please help. Thanks. oh p.s. the old phone updated like twice in the last two months and Verizon told me there hasnt been one since December, new phone is running 4.1.1.. Oh and when I check for updates on the new phone it trys to connect for like 3 mins then says to try again when there is service. Im on wifi, also tried it on 4G and 3G.

I am on Sprint's version and I can have a different notification for texts, but it is the same sound for all texts irrelevant of who sent it to me. To change that, you need to open the Message app where you see the screen that has all your conversations and click Menu>Settings, and notifications is about halfway down. If you were able to have a different sounds for different contact text messages, I don't have a clue where to find that. It is possible that somewhere between the different ROM builds, that option was removed (or added and you can't install it.)

Latest version of android on Verizon is 4.1.2, that being said you should be able to do this I have the option in contacts to change the ring tone for individual contracts.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using Android Central Forums

The ability to change ring tones for individual contacts has always been there. The ability to set message tones for individual contacts requires 4.1.2. If you (the OP) can't get your phone to update to 4.1.2 just take it by a Verizon store. They should be able to force the update.

If you go to update in the settings do you get an error message? I can't recall the exact wording but basically the update service can't be reached? If that is the case go by the nearest Verizon store and get a new SIM card and then it'll update and you'll have the option back.
