Got a new SD card for my V. Can I just copy all of my files on the old card to the new one and be good to go? Or will this mess something up?

you can and it will be fine. before you swap SD cards, move any apps you have on the SD card back into phone memory, then when you put the new card it, put them back on the SD

i believe these app files are hidden and dont get copied if you try to drag and drop everything. the process goes easier when you just move the apps back into the phone, transfer SD cards, and move the apps back.

as for pics and music and anything else, just copy it over, phone will see it just the same.

What about the opposite? I'm swapping phones, want to keep my library of 300 songs. What do I need to do to get all my music on my new phone?

Your music is stored on your sdcard. Just connect your old phone to your computer, copy your music to your computer, then connect your new phone to your computer and copy your music to it. If you plan on using the sdcard from your old phone in your new phone just put the sdcard with your music on it in the new phone.

Gotcha. Thank you very much.

an SD card is removable storage, designed to be hot swapped.

i cant believe so many people dont know they can just swap cards any time

I already knew music / photos could just be copied over, but my SD card also contains a number of other files / folders that I have no idea about. I actually wasn't even aware that my phone was automatically installing some apps to the SD card. Last time I did something similar, I copied all the data off the card to use it as a glorified flash drive, and when I copied the files back later on, my phone was totally borked and I ended up having to wipe / re-flash. That's why I asked.

android creates a lot of its own folders on the SD card but can usually function just fine if its removed.

I know it builds a photo cache of thumbnails for the gallery app, and stores these on the SD card. and uses them to navigate that app. playlists are stored on the SD card I think, as well as cache data from maps, browser, youtube. anything where the cache could accumulate and eat phone storage. except if the SD card is missing or another one is installed, the apps just start over building a cache, thats what that "preparing SD card" message at the top means when you insert one. its checking for caches and building needed ones.

same reason why a freshly flashed rom will lag for a good while while it goes thru the SD cards contents, lags a lot longer if its gotta sort gigs and gigs of music and videos (like my phone had to everytime I flashed a rom) haha

some apps do auto install to SD, thats a good point. easiest thing to do is manually transfer to phone storage and back to the new SD.

You can also use a backup program like titanium backup, to backup all your apps/games. Copy the stuff from the old card to the new card and restore from backup.

I think the only reason I asked was because the last time I basically did the same process and everything got borked. I just took it as an opportunity to flash another IHO build that I've been meaning to use and started from scratch. Thanks for the help.
