Hello All,

I am new to android and I am trying to figure out what phone to buy. I am coming from a iphone 4 and am tired of it. I have been wanting to switch to android for a while now, and the time has come. Any input from yall on what phone to get would be great! Thanks. I am with at&t by the way.

my recommendation is go to youtube or search here for the device reviews and watch the videos so you can see the user interface and the device functioning.

the htc inspire, motorola atrix and samsung infuse are great phones and you cant go wrong with any the first two are already out but the infuse comes out sunday may 15. you can't go wrong with any of those.

I hope you'll make the jump to Android. I came from Palm/WebOS and glad I did! Like any new OS, it takes a bit of getting used to, but you will...

Take the time to read reviews, and hopefully get out to a brick-and-mortar retailer to play with the models, BEFORE you buy. I found it was a terrible mistake to buy an unfamiliar device, solely based upon online reviews. The time you spend actually using the hardware, even if they are demo units, is time well spent. No matter which one(s) you choose, you will have 30 days to make up your mind. Don't hesitate to switch!

As an iPhone user, you will be interested in the several threads in this forum, specifically based upon iPhone users coming to Android and the Atrix, so look around for their added insight.

I am thinking about going to play with the atrix this afternoon. Is it true that it will be getting a gingerbread update? Also, is the nexus s coming to att?

I think that Apple is the only device maker that delivers its updates in a straightforward manner. For all others, and that includes Motorola, there are no sure bets. Understand, there is no obligation for Android, Motorola, or ATT to furnish updates, once they've sold you the phone. We just hope they deliver on their promises. Do not buy a phone based upon the expectation that an update will come. ONLY buy a device based upon what the device can do, RIGHT NOW. If you buy, assuming that some feature or function will arrive down the road, you may well get stuck owning a device which will forever be unsatisfactory to you. You must assume that, once that 30-day buyers remorse period ends, what you have is what you got!

Myself, I am definitely looking to buy a Nexus S for ATT bands. I realize that Negri is selling them online, but these are "open box" phones, I'm suspicious of their status. Also, since there are no brick-and-mortar retailers with these, I can't actually play with them, first. In today's AndroidCentral, there is an article which hints at an impending full release by Samsung of the Nexus S for ATT bands. So, I do believe that the Nexus S for ATT bands is coming. Good things come to those who wait....and wait....

yes the atrix will get gingerbread when nobody knows.

there are already nexus s models that work on att 3g but not for sale in the us. negrielectronics sells them and they can be shipped here.
but the rumor is a white nexus s popped up on samsung's website and under carrier it says at&t but android rumors come and go a lot so you cannot bet on a launch date yet.

o and if this is your first android device do not base your judgement on performance on demo units! yes you need to feel and and try the units in your hand but they sit on for so long abused by customers and often have task killers installed which make them lag so bad so you can really get a skewed view of the device. so yes go play with it feel but if its laggy its only because it is a demo trust me! so just take demo units with a grain of salt.

i agree with you on the not guarantee updates but with the new google coalition for updates i think its a safe bet atrix will see gingerbread.

and not all of the negri phones are open box they state which ones are and are not. and you can play with a tmobile nexus s at best buy its exact same phone just different bands.

either one is great as a first time user you must likely wont really miss vanilla android and you might enjoy some of the motoblur features. but play with the atrix play with the inspire by htc, this sunday the infuse comes out and if you want to see a nexus s head to best buy and play with one. your joining android at a great point where you really cant go wrong with any of the new devices.

For a first time user, would you recommend the nexus s or atrix?

Both are great phones, and your choice must be based upon your own preferences and needs.

The 2 features of the Nexus S which are most often called out as negatives are:
Lack of SD card facility. You are limited to the 16 gigs of internal storage.

Lack of an indicator LED, to tell you about email and other alerts

Then there are a bunch of others, which you can easily search reviews for.

On the other hand, a few plusses for the Nexus S:
A superb display

Frequent and direct software updates direct from Google/Android

The phone is unlocked and capable of all manner of the dev's mods. And you get the "pure Android experience".

And so on...

For me, the lack of the SD card facility is not an issue at all. I do frequent file exchanges with my desktop machine, so I do not need 32 gigs of removable storage for my phone.

I love the fact that you get the latest and best software direct from Google/Android. You are never dependent upon the device maker and the cell phone provider for updates.

I have no need for Motoblur or any of these other manufacturer's "skins".

So, the Nexus S has many things which I like. Your needs may differ.

For the Atrix, there is the incredible speed. Many folks like the MotoBlur skin. They like the gigantic removable storage facility. And there is the hope and belief that Andoid 2.3 will come, someday, which promises to unleash still more power in the Atrix processor, among other things.
