So I'm new to Android, just got the Evo 4G. Love it but these crap apps Sprint loaded gotta go. So I was trying to use this how to:

After root, how do you remove bloatware? - Android Forums

But I'm not sure how to do a Nandroid back up. And when I try to use ADB I get a $ instead of a #. Any ideas?

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]

C:\Users\Ray>cd C:\Android_stuff\android-sdk-windows\tools

C:\Android_stuff\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb devices
adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached

C:\Android_stuff\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb shell
$

power off
hold volume down while powering up
Let it do its thing
Select recovery
Screen changes
Connect usb
then use the windows .bat file this elk get you to the nandroid looking screen
Sometimes I have to run the .bat file twice

Now open cmd window
Go to sdk directory
Adb shell
mount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
cd system
Cd app
Ls
You'll have a list if apps
rm appname.apk and .odex remember its case sensitive

Im out right now but will try when I get home. Only thing im not sure on is the .bat can you explain what you mean run it?

Do this first

{tutorial} how to root \0/ - xda-developers

If you have already rooted using the unrevoked method. I'm not sure how the two play together. If you run into issues go back to stock and just root this way. This is the only method that gets you recovery, nandroid and flashing capability. It also allows adb while in recovery.

The .bat file is in the link above. Its not sticky meaning you have to run that on your pc to get to the recovery/nandroid. Eventually you won't need that but for now that is all that is available.

Then this is about removing apps in recovery.

Apps that are ok to remove with root - xda-developers

Read my sticky tutorial above (its literally the first thread on this forum)

Check out bullet point #1. It specifically answered your question about unrevoked

Ksmith, thank you very much for the tutorial. I saw it but didnt know how to do a back up.that's the real reason for this post. :)

Assuming your on the recovery screen there's something that says backup/restore. Select that then select nand backup.

None of this will work if you close the dos prompt that opens when you click the Windows-recovery bat file so leave that open. It will close automatically when you leave recovery

Okay so I did the root. When back in to cmd

C:\Users\Ray>cd C:\Android_stuff\android-sdk-windows\tools

C:\Android_stuff\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb devices
List of devices attached
HT05PHL06074 device

C:\Android_stuff\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb shell
# adb reboot recovery
adb reboot recovery
adb: not found
#

I don't think I know ADB all that well, LOL.

try this

C:\Android_stuff\android-sdk-windows\tools
C:\Android_stuff\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb shell
# reboot recovery

your problem is you are adding "adb" before the reboot recovery ... it's not necessary

Okay so I think I'm getting further into understand this but...

C:\Users\Ray>cd c:\android\tools

c:\android\tools>adb
Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.26

c:\android\tools>adb shell
# reboot recovery
reboot recovery

c:\android\tools>adb shell
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -

c:\android\tools>

Okay so I think I'm getting further into understand this but...

ok wait ... follow my instructions to the letter ... Don't type anything except for what i post below. Then report the results

C:\Users\Ray>cd c:\android\tools
c:\android\tools>adb shell
# reboot recovery

Just follow the above. Don't make any changes.

I'm headed to bed so if you post tonight i probably wont see it (unless i cant sleep) so hopefully someone else will chime in and help out or I'll catch you tomorrow.

Sorry ... thought of 2 more things

1) Do you have USB debugging enabled on your phone? Menu>Settings>Application>Development> Check mark usb debugging
2) Did you rename the zip on the root of your SD card to be called root-pc36IMG.zip? If not, do it.

Yes I did both of those...

c:\android\tools>adb shell
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -

happens when the device is in recovery...

You don't have to put it in recovery by adb. Just shut off the phone, hold down volume, push power, let it do its thing, select recovery and the device will go into recovery mode.

then do the .bat file. Once the bat file loads you will see a menu driven system on your device. If you don't then run the .bat file again.

Once you see the menu on the phone open a command box, leave the current one open and:

adb shell

You will now be in shell

Then type the mount command I posted earlier and follow the rest of the directions and you will be fine.

when you click the windows-recovery.bat file a cmd window should open and run ... are you closing that window?

I'm no longer having issues with backing up and flashing. It's just trying to rm the stock Sprint apk's.

After you do #reboot recovery you need to launch the windows-recovery.bat file. Go back to toasts instructions and go down to the recovery part. This will launch an extra cmd window that you just leave alone and ignore. Recap = you will have 3 cmd screens open ... one from when you first launch the sdk which is completely blank, one from after your in sdk which is the one you type commands into, and one that launches from the .bat file which you ignore
