New to Android...Root or not?

Hi All - I have just joined and not very familiar with Android, I have a Galaxy S (i9000) and it's very slow sometimes I can't even make a call I have to wait for the screen to load....!!!

I've done some re-search and I've heard of rooting the device will this help? If so How do I do it?
