Long time DX user & rooter here just starting to get into flashing ROMs.

I'm currently on .605 rooted with the wireless tether patch. I am looking for a good (stable) ROM using the .605 Gingerbread kernel to run on my Droid X instead of stock. I prefer something as Blur-free as possible but am having trouble deciding which to go with. I have SOME experience with flashing ROMs, I have a Droid Incredible that I am using as my daily driver now that I put CM 7.1 on it & LOVE it, but from reviews & other threads I have read, CyanogenMod is much more buggy on the Droid X. I've read good things about Liquid Smooth (which I understand is CM based). Is anyone using that?

Also, the free version of ROM Manager works great on the Droid Incredible, is it worthless on the Droid X or what? I don't see much available on Droid X or Droid X (2nd init). I do have the Droid X Bootstrapper & understand that ROM Manager may not be needed with that.

My main requirement for a ROM is for it to be as bug free as possible. I am really not interested in flashing fixes for data, Wifi, camera functionality, or anything like that when something else may be available that already works.

I'm sure I will come up with more questions as this thread evolves. Thank you in advance for anyone that can help.

Since you have exp, I can recommend the DX rooting/rom thread here and read thru those. The DX for a while was one of the more difficult devices to break into for quite a while which is why alot of ROMs/mods that were/are released are buggy simply because we nees the users to test. I once was a Dinc user myself on CM to MIUI and everything in between.

The DX now has a lot more working features with recently released ROMs and their features. Once you've gotten thru our threads and have a handle on what is good for YOU, head over the the dev forum for the DX at rootzwiki and browse the ROM selection. It is vast from blur based to wild off ur ass Miui/ICS brands and some creepy in between stuff. Keep the 602.sbf handy(trust that caution) and be sure to keep the dev appreciation goin.

Miui of course!! If you want something that is very VERY stable. No need to flash any patches or things like that

For very stable I'd recommend VorteX 2.9 RC1. It is solid.

Lately I've been using EncounterICS because ICS is bad ass. There aren't camera drivers or non call voice support so I use Boot Manager to switch to VorteX when needed.

I'm using a Liberty rom right now, and it has been very fast and smooth for me so far. Everything works and there are a lot of customization options.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I ended up flashing Liberty 3 v2.0 & am really liking it. I love that it comes AOSP but you can very easily add back in Blur apps if you want. Everything works as it should & I didn't have to flash any fixes.

I may try VorteX & Apex because they were high on my list too.

I looked into MIUI but something about it didn't really seem like my style.

i can tell you that even though i dont remember seeing CM7 come out with a release candidate version for the DX, i used the nightlies as my daily driver for months and never ran into any bugs or any other issues at all.

as far as the rom manager/bootstrapper question, rom manager is a good tool for people that like an easier process when flashing roms; i personally like having my hands on every step, so once i install clockwork recovery, i rarely used the app at all. the bootstrap app is needed to get around the encrypted bootloader to boot into recovery, but the need for it disappeared once 2nd-init was figured out. some roms require that you have the bootstrap app, but i believe any rom that uses 2nd init (i.e. CM7) actually warns you not to use it at all once the rom is installed. flashing anything from stock though still requires you to use the bootstrap app to get into recovery, i believe. i might have that info slightly twisted (its been a while since i flashed a whole new rom on my DX; like i said, been running CM7 since it appeared), but the instructions in the rom will usually tell you whether or not you need to use the bootstrap application to get into recovery.

I see you choose the new Liberty, good pick. That's what i'm currently running and it is great. Fast, great battery and very minor bugs if any. I tried ApeX about a week ago, it's nice. Good battery and fast, just not a whole lot of bells and whistles. Had a bug in the email app to, couldn't get any email to delete, every time it would check for new mail it would grab everything and send it in as new again. Very annoying.

I think I am going to give VorteX a try as soon as my phone is charged, I just have that itch to flash something new. :-$

Edit: Decided to go with the 1/20 build CM74DX-GB, AWESOME! So glad I did, this ROM is crazy fast, so far has great battery and the camera works perfect!

I am currently not rooted, but here lately I am wanting too and am doing my homework. I too want a stable rom to run and I see that some people have mentioned vortex. Can someone give me some insight into that rom? I have been to the website so I know it looks cool and like the few themes it has but I would like some more benefits to run vortex.

Benefits are its an awesome ROM, bloat free, its fast, it has great battery life and good customization options. If you want more on the customizing side I'd go with CM7 although battery life while good may not be as good depending on your use.

How stable is CM7? I know they are a reputable modder, but does everything work with the phone. I would like to find nice stable rom that I could use everyday, Also, I have noticed that the themes I have seen on rootzwiki for vortex, which look awsome, all the links have been disabled, does anyone know why?

CM7 is very stable, daily use is great, its my main ROM and I have no issues or errors. VorteX and Liberty are also great ROMS. You really just have to try them all and pick one that works the best for you.

Thanks a lot! I am happy to say that I have achieved root yesterday and with any luck I won't brick my phone. But really I will check into CM7 and see if they have different themes and what they can offer. Really appreciate the info.

No problem happy to help, glad you got root, lets know how the ROM flashing goes!

I tried CM7 for a few days but went back to Liberty 3 last night. It seemed more stable to me & Liberty has working HDMI out & 1% battery increments, both unavailable in CM7.

I'm interested in trying the ROMs based on the ICS framework when they are more polished, but until then, I think I found a keeper with Liberty.

Edit: On a side note, I've become an expert on SBF'ing back to stock .602. :-)

My coworker has a Droid X and I have a Samsung Fascinate. My phone is so EASY to work with. I have modded it and flashed ROMS like crazy. But I have no experience with the Droid X and I have heard it is hard to flash any ROM to the Droid X. Basically, I am asking how do I flash a ROM onto Droid X for the first time. Thanks! I am very unfamiliar with bootstrap and its purpose. I am used to Clockworkmod Recovery and installing it directly to the phone. Thanks!

It's not difficult at all to flash a ROM to the Droid X. It just seems like it because it has to be done step by step instead of an app like ROM Manager doing the steps for you.

The most helpful info I found when I decided to flash ROMs was: www.droidmodderx.com. He shows every step in the YouTube videos & even links to the necessary files for the ROM you choose.

Question: Can i go ahead a flash the wifi tether patch over EncounterICS ROM? Had it flash on rooted stock but i dont know if it will have any ill effects on a ROM.

I've never tried that ROM, but I would think there wouldn't be any ill effect & it would actually be necessary if you wanted to tether.

From what I understand, ALL ROMs based on the Gingerbread kernel (.602 or .605) need that patch to get around Verizon's tracking.

I've used the patch on rooted stock .605, Liberty 3 v2.0, & CM7 with no problems whatsoever.
