hey all, i am new to nexus s and back on android from wp7. ive been gone for about 8 months and really fell behind. my last phone was a samsung fascinate and i had it rooted running superclean 2.9. it was a very fast rom and very stable, probably the most common. also owned a droid x running apex 2. anywho, its been a long time since ive rooted and installed a custom rom. one of the reasons i left android was because of how smooth wp7 was and the fact i wanted a premium mp3 player integrated in my phone ( via zune or itunes ) all that being said, i want my nexus s to be stable, and ive heard its already pretty fast. so is it worth rooting? ( dont tether much, however would love improved radios for signal strength) if it is worth it and there are plenty of stable roms? what do you guys reccommend? also is there a one click root method on this phone like z4 root?

thanks!

Miui was the smoothest for me. But no 4g

No z4. You have to use the SDK through terminal -__-
Unless with the rare chance you run windows, there are some simplified ways of unlocking the bootloader, then flashing supersuser, then clockwork mod.

Rare chance?

There is a one click method for rooting etc.

Oxygen is basically stock Gingerbread with minimal features added like controls in the notification bar, built in screen shots, and tethering. The kernel it comes with also supports Voodoo Control which allows you to adjust the screen colors and also unlocks the Wolfson DAC that's inside the Nexus for night and day sound, especially when coupled with a player like PowerAMP and assuming you have headphones that aren't in the Skullcandy price range.

is it worth rooting though? my main reasons to root would be improved battery life and radio signals... however i dont want a high maintenance phone either... i just want it to "work" my experience with overclocking is the phone becomes tempomental...

oxygen sounds like my kinda rom... so its basically stock with some added settings and voodoo... are the kernels overclocked?
not sure what the wolfsons DAC is... and i have sennheiser cx500 headphones, they are better than bose IMO

You can flash different radios and see which works best for you. Battery life will improve with custom ROMs and kernels. For stable, I suggest GPA17 or Oxygen. Those are as stable as stock.

Oxygen ROM. Plain old Android with very very minimal additions. I've tried MIUI, Cyanogen Mod 7, and if course stock; Oxygen has been my favorite. CM7 has too many customozations and varies too far from stock Android. MIUI feels a bit to iOS-ish for my liking. Stock is fine, but I want to tether by using the OS's tether instead of an app.

Kernel comes set at stock 1gig but can be under or overclocked up to 1.4.

Wolfson DAC is a great Digital to Analog Converter. IT's basically just the chip that deals with the music playback on the device. It's good stuff, trust me.

One Click

Once you're rooted you can get the ROMs through ROM Manager that you can get from the Market. Otherwise, this post in this forum has the ROM info compiled.

fan of GPA17. It's as close to stock as i've been and it's crazy fast and stable
Oxygen is great too and it's got a few common features that you see in may other custom roms that I do like. I tend to stick with GPA17 most of the time but will hop around when i'm reviewing a ROM.

Apex was awesome. I came from the DX. I loved rubiX when it was still being maintained.
