New to rooting all together

Hey guys so I tried to root my phone about half a year ago, but never really did anything after I finished "rooting" it because I didn't know what rom/theme or whatever they're called to install.

Here is the software information for my phone:
Android version: 2.2.1
Baseband Version: 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Kernel version: 2.6.32.21-g899d047
Build number: 1.17.531.2 CL277036 release-keys
Software number: 1.17.531.2
Browser version: Webkit 3.1

I want to completely wipe my phone and start from scratch, so my real question is should I update to the most recent android version, or stay with 2.2.1. In either case, how do I do a hard wipe? After the hard wipe, what root method should I go for and what should I install after the rooting is done. I want to remove all the pre-installed applications that come with the mytouch :/. Thanks in advance ^^

I am in somewhat the same boat with being on a different version of Android having the 2.3.4. It seems that there is information over load on every site for rooting a mytouch 4g phone. I have Rom Manager on my phone, but I am waiting for the warranty to go out Mid July before starting the root process. If using Rom Manager is the easiest please let me know unless there is something easier to do. Thanks for any help

Make sure you read through the stickies and NEVER NEVER NEVER do a system restore or update from the settings menu it will brick ur phone . Don't be afraid to ask a question but before you ask search the tread for the answer cause the question at hand might have been addressed and answered. Also as a beginner use the most stable rom and stay away from alpha status roms as they are for the more experienced users just due to bugs that are getting worked out. I hope this has helped and remember we all have been noobs
