New to smarphone, need app advice

I'm getting my first smartphone (HTC Thunderbolt) and have App ignorance. I would love advice on the best places to get them and how to avoid bad ones. I don't know what to look for to make sure they are safe.

First off, the device has the "Market" in which you can find apps. Best thing to do is read "What are your top X apps?" and reading the reviews and seeing how many d/ls of that app there are (as well as looking at the amount of stars they got).
