New to Smartphones, Android OS, etc etc etc

I was wondering, I just got the GS2, will I be able to update it to the next version of the android OS that comes out? Or are smartphones exclusive to the OS thats out at that time only? Not sure how all this works....

And that's a sore spot for Samsung users on AT&T. Both companies dragged their feet on making the 2.2 Froyo update available. Froyo was released in May 2010. The Captivate was introduced in July 2010 with 2.1 Eclair and promises of a quick update, but the official 2.2 release occurred in February.

I'm satisfied with Gingerbread as a finished product that I'm not going to get into a snit about not getting Ice Cream Sandwich in a timely fashion.

I think this time the griping will be at an all time high because ice cream sandwich is so much different from the way the OS looks now on android phones. Just wait until its available on a few phones in a few months and grab your Orville Redenbaucher lol.
