I am looking into switching onto verizon pretty soon but a bit confused on these"global ready" phones. Does the ultra or the iphone 5 on verizon network have a sim card slot to use for when you travel internationally with a local sim card? or how does it work

Yep they have SIM slots. Some phones even work on ATT.

They use a nanoSIM card so you would have to cut your SIM down to make it fit.
