I was told that my last Fossil watch failed to last 2 years and a week because I let it discharge too often.

Not wanting that to happen again. It seems my new Fossil watch isn't lasting a day either. 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. doesn't seem like I have much choice to let get down to zero.

I don't want to return it cuz I've already spent $10 to have band adjusted and drove an hour to a city to do it.

Which Fossil watch is your new one? Still 4th gen Explorist? I recall that's what you mentioned you had before.

Do you remember what you were doing when the battery dipped more quickly in midafternoon? Were you exercising? Keep in mind that if you have background heart rate sensor turned on, that'll make the battery drain more quickly.

The GPS radio combined with those features will also do that.
Was your watch installing an update over BT at that time? Android System and android OS look like they were doing something heavy over BT in the late afternoon.

My WearOS battery continues to be very stable and consistent since the October update.
I take it off the charger at 8:30 AM, by 10:45 PM its at 50%. This is with moderate use as a screen-OFF BT notifier, checking txt / voice messages and a few other screen interactions here and there. This is for a 2+ year old Gen4 explorist.

No I purchased the 5th gen it is called Garret hr.

As for what I was doing I'm at work so walking and carrying stock.

The only thing I used the watch for was 2 15 minute timers weeks 1 30 minute timers. I didn't even use tap and pay.

I do have heart rate on because that is why I purchased a smart watch and I get a gift card from my health insurance for using it.

let the power drain to 5 percent a couple of times in a row to calibrate the battery. then see if you still have battery drainage issues.

Thanks I'll try that. I'm traveling to denver on Thursday so that should give me time. Hopefully the Fossil store can help me if it doesn't

If you want to keep Background Heart Rate on, you'll have to accept that it'll use battery faster. The HR sensor works by flashing a bright strobe LED on the back of the case onto your skin and reading your pulse that way -- those LEDs take energy to light up, and if they're going on frequently on a regular basis, it adds up.
