OK, I'm totally new to rooting and do not know much programming, so I need total full instructions to revert to .5 and then root.

I found this:

xda-developers - View Single Post - [GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero

without any real instructions...

How do you do this, how do you run the downloads into your computer or phone and then downgrade to .5?

Step by step would be greatly appreciated (only to revert to .5).

Thanks!

PS: BTW, I could not find a step by step for reverting to .5.

Thanks for your input guys, I did read about the one click root all over the forums. The main thing is I want to learn the long way, no shortcuts. My purpose is to learn inside out if possible, this way I become familiar with rooting, adding ROMs, etc.

I know it may sound stupid for some, but this is what I really want to learn. If anybody has instructions to revert to .5, please post on this thread, I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to learn the long way.

If you want to root the long way then you will have to download the RUU with .5. Download it to the comupter and with your phone connected Run the program. It will guide you through the process revert your phone to the required spec for root.

It's a good way to learn the basics of ADB. Be sure to keep the RUU on file just in case you need to return it back to factory spec in the future.

actually to me this is the RIGHT way to do it. i want to know what commands are used and what they mean, and what they do. why do i do this and that. nice to just press a button but what makes it work and whats going on behind that button.

So any questions feel free to as. we are happy to answer. :)

First of all, thanks a lot, I got it all figured out! Ran the RUU (just follow the instructions) and went back to .5. Then followed the instructions for .5 rooting and now I'm rooted. This is very exciting, I love the "long way", I seem to have learn some about rooting, but I forgot one thing, please read on.

I used this method to root:

I did not do a backup of stock 2.1 to go back if I want or need to in the future. I did think about it afterwards, but I guess now is too late. Or not? Is it possible to go back to stock now if I wanted to?

Please let me know. I did see while doing the root, it did create a nand backup towards the end, but that's when I believe the root is already done, so it doesn't count to go back to stock.

Also as a follow up to my successful rooting, I would like your opinion as to which ROM to install now. Also, I need the instructions for it. There are too many ROMs out there, but I guess I'm trying to stay with as close to stock as possible for now.

In the future I would like to move to Froyo, but that's more heavy duty in my opinion.

If you want to stay as close as possible to stock, then just stay stock. You don't have to flash a rom just because you're rooted. With that said, beezy's honey bun roms are an excellent choice. I ran them myself, before switching to CM6.

You can always run the RUU to restore the "stock" ROM. It will remove the rooting you did. Also, as you've just rooted, the only difference between your current ROM and the stock ROM is super-user app and the recovery image.

I would recommend running a nandriod back up if you have not done so, and then start ROM shopping. Be warned, it can be addictive.

There is a Cyanogen Froyo build by Darchstar et al located here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-roms-hacks/29108-rom-cyanogenmod-v6-0-0-rc1.html
The ROM is by no means heavy duty and will work out fine even if your new to rooting.

You want to download the Cyanogen 6.0.0 - RC1 file and the Google Addon. If you install the Cyanogen ROM without the addon you will not have google applications like market, maps, gmail etc. The above link provides you with the installation instructions. When he refers to #4 - Wipe, it means to wipe phone data and dalvik. This is why you need to do a backup before installing the ROM just in case you need to restore the phone to it's prior ROM and settings.

Make sure both files are placed on the root of the SD card after you download the two files and flash them through recovery.

I'd strongly recommend that you install as many ROMs available for the Heroc (CDMA version only) and see which one you like. Every ROM has something different to offer and you might find one better than another for various reasons. Let us know if you have any questions.

Fantastic, thanks for all your help. Last night I downloaded RegawMOD v2.1r (4.11.10) found here:

[ROM] RegawMOD v2.1 | (4/12/10) TOO FAST?! LWP w/ Custom Espresso - xda-developers

I messed it up, didn't wipe before booting up and got the infinite loop... Anyway, lesson learned and this morning found on different forums to wipe before flashing (which was on the instructions anyway, but I didn't understand how to do it), I did wipe and flashed again and voila, now I have a working ROM on my Hero. It's almost close to stock, it looks really slick, which is great for a newbie, but I may need more speed.

Any suggestions? Perhaps an overclocked ROM which is close to stock?

And yes, I think this is just the beginning of ROM addiction...

As close to stock as possible with overclocking? Honeybun simply the best.

Coolness, I think that's next...

I was reading a little about it, we have to overclock it or does it come already overclocked?

Honey bun is not oc'd. You will have to get another kernal. I'm pretty sure there is a link in the honey bun thread for a under volted kernal and it works great. You will also have to dl the overclockwidget from the market to set your speed.

I did it, installed Honeybun on Wednesday and it runs a little faster than RegawMOD v2.1r (4.11.10) IMO. I will download the OC (Overclock) tonight, even though it seems like is fast enough already. If is faster with OC, it will feel like Froyo...OK maybe not, I'm pushing it. It just runs very smooth, no lag at all.

The whole rooting & ROM process is so much easier than I expected, I really cannot believe I took so long; very happy with the results, much better than I even expected. The stock ROM is too laggy and very slow overall, I will advice anyone with a Hero to read a lot about rooting and go with it, you WILL ENJOY your Hero, unlike what you maybe experiencing now without root.

I would try the undervolt / OC rom for honeybun - it does make a difference. As for comparing it to Froyo, it is not quite as fast when you compare it through benchmark tools, but the overall experience is smoother and faster at this point in my experience. I flash one of the froyo builds every once and a while to give it a try, but always end up back with OC'd, undervolted honeybun.

Do you have more info on that undervolted honeybun? I read about it somewhere, but it seemed very complicated to install... of course I'm still a newbie!
