I thought about this the other day. HTC made the first nexus phone, and samsung the next. Do you think Google will move down the line of manufacturers to make the next one? Such as motorola or lg even? Wanted to see your thoughts on it.

I think Google will stick with Samsung here is why. Samsung gives them the most freedom I think they moved away from HTC because HTC wants sense on there devices and was probably wanting it on the Nexus. Samsung likes to try everything they are like the Mikey of cell phone manufacturers and will give Google the freedom they need. I don't see Motorola doing that. That said LG is a real possibility it just depends on how much success Google has with the Nexus S. If sales are poor they might farm out the next Nexus but I doubt they will

Google doesn't really care about sales for Nexus phones. If they did, they try to make them easier to buy (available in more stores and on more carriers).
I also doubt that that really care who manufactures it. My gut is that when they want to build a new phone they put out some type of RFP for manufacturers. The RFP will include must-haves (e.g.): 1ghz proc, no physical buttons and NFC. With that manus can present their proposals and costs. Google will choose the concepts it likes the most (features and cost). As such, I don't think they're cycling manus intentionally.

I agree with everything you said except for the last sentence. I think they allowed Samsung to manufacture the Nexus S as reward for their work on the Galaxy S line. The Vibrant, Captivate, Fascinate, and Epic 4G brought Android to so many people. The Captivate especially was a crucial Android device because before it came out, customers on AT&T did not have a strong Android selection to choose from. I believe the Epic 4G with its keyboard was crucial in getting customers to choose Android over Blackberry because there are definitely customers who will not use a phone without a QWERTY and the 4G was a bonus. However I think customers on T-Mobile and Verizon looking at the Vibrant and Fascinate, respectively, would have chosen another Android phone had Samsung never come out with the Galaxy S line.

I also see Google allowing Samsung to create the Nexus S as a form of punishment to Motorola. While Motorola was instrumental in boosting Android with the OG Droid and the Droid X, I believe Google was disappointed in Motorola's decision to included locked bootloaders and that is why there is no Motorola Nexus device. They would logically been next in line after HTC (who created the OG Android phone, the G1) but the locked bootloader issue, which arose after mid July when the Droid X was released, was enough time for Google to give the right to Samsung. Hopefully thats not too hard to understand.

Google adds cpu specific optimization to each version of the OS. This started with 2.0 (TI OMAP), 2.1 (Snapdragon), 2.2 introduced a new framework and a JIT, optimized with NEON instructions, 2.3 (Samsung Hummingbird), 3.0 (Tegra 2)

My gut call says the biggest hardware req for the next Nexus phone is a Tegra 2, with dual channel hardware like the Optimus 3D, to get the phone side and tablet side better integrated. I'm seeing the Optimus, minus the 3D as the best candidate, or a Motorola Bionic style device with 1G of RAM and a dual channel bus to match the RAM.

As long as some damn source code comes with, either sounds good :)

I agree with Jerry, the next Nexus will prolly be dual CPU with the name Nexus M or Nexus L.
