My wife's Nexus 5 is still perfectly functional. I had been planning on replacing it with this year's new Google phone. But, with the price of the Pixels, we can't justify the expense. Since the Nexus 5 is now End of Life (EOL), is there some way to continue to get Security Updates? Would flashing a custom ROM do that?

Yep... the custom ROMs are mostly all built off the AOSP mainline codebase, which includes all of the security updates Google is releasing each month. Every ROM is different, but many do their best to keep up to date with the monthly updates.

Pure Nexus and Dirty Unicorns are two that I am pretty familiar with. Both are based on AOSP, rather than CyanogenMod.

I've been searching the Internet on this and have pretty much decided to give Pure Nexus a shot. Both it and Cataclysm kept popping up. Pure Nexus looks like it might be the best here.

Cataclysm stopped development some time around January, so that's a dead end. When active, it was one of the best ones.
