Nexus 5 Lollipop 5.1 Upgrade - Massive increase in external data

Have a Nexus 5, which has operated perfectly until the 5.1 upgrade just over a week ago. Since then we have had 2,000 separate 1 MB charges to our account and all entries relate to when we are at home connected to Wifi.

The entries are every 3-5 minutes, even during the middle of the night.

In part this is due to the service provider charging at a minimum 1 MB, despite a lesser data download, but I don't understand why this occurs ONLY when we are home and connected to Wifi when there should be no external data usage. This usage stops when we leave the house.

No other devices in the house are experiencing this problem, including one of the devices which uses the same service provider.

Any ideas? Is it the phone?

If you have mobile data turned off when you're on wifi (you should), I'd say the update broke something. Bring it into the carrier and ask them to 1) fix what their update broke (if you're in the US, they're legally liable if something they did broke something you own) and 2) remove all that extra data usage from your account.
