hey guys, i copied a post that was written buy another but is relevant for me to.
from: Microphone issue on the Nexus 5 - xda-developers

"Hello, so, I've seen a lot of people complaining about microphone noise but that's not my problem.

The Problem:

Sometimes when people call me they say they can't hear me, or hear me like I'm meters away from the phone, other times it's fine. Tried recording with the camera and with sound recording apps from the play store and they all record the sound perfectly on both mics.

The Debugging

Seeing this seemed to be happen randomly on the calls but I couldn't reproduce it anywhere else I decided to start digging the root of this problem.

I searched the web and got this thread on Google Forums: Google Groups where they mention recording with Google Keep, so I did a comparison betwen a recording with ASR (https://forums.androidcentral.com/e.../store/apps/d...id=com.nll.asr&token=WZFXoEFE) and Google Keep, here:

ASR: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ASRbgnoise.ogg
Keep: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...eepbgnoise.3gp

As you can see (hear), the problem doesn't seem to be hardware related, as the recording with ASR sounds perfect, even when I recorded with noise cancellation on, off and using the camera mic, with background noise, but I can barely hear the Google Keep recording, it sounds like I'm meters away from the phone.

The problem seems to affect about 1/4th of my calls and with Google Keep it seems that it's always there, atleast on all my recordings, I think it might be a software bug on the noise cancellation, what do you guys think? I think that if it was hardware problem it would happen with all apps?

Any help you guys could give me on how to further debug and/or fix this would be very welcome."

I am also experiencing this issue. For me it seems like the mic is calibrated to not be very sensitive in-call. Typically, I like holding my phone mics a bit fuirther from my face, so the screen doesn't press against my face and get the screen oily. I had no problems making calls like this on my Galaxy Nexus.

However, on the Nexus 5 I have learned that holding the phone at a similar angle away from my mouth will result in people constantly having trouble hearing me clearly or telling me I sound far away or muffled. When I press the phone screen against my face so the mic is closer to my mouth, they can hear me fine.

One time I left an early morning voicemail at my job calling in sick and later that day I received a call from my job asking me if I was coming in or not. Apparently, the voice mail I left was barely audible. After that incident I tested it by calling a voicemail and pressing "1" to listen to my message. As I suspected, when I spoke with my mouth a few more inches from the mic, it sounds garbled and odd. When I held the mic with the screen pressed to my face or 1 cm off of my face, it sounded clear.

So it seems that the mic is not sensitive or there is a calibration preference Google made consisting of a combination of issues ranging from noise cancellation settings or mic sensititvity settings. I have the latest update and still experience the issue. In fact, it happened 5 minutes ago.

Having the same issue. I've also found that the volume on plugged in headphones is quite lower than my other phones. Also haven't seen any improvement with the recent update which I was hoping for since 4.4.2 was a quick bug fix released within a week of 4.4.1

This is starting to get quite a bit of press I found out after doing some searches so hopefully it's not a hardware issue. My N4 wasn't stellar in this regard either. maybe the parts LG uses?

Considering the improvements on my own phone, I am leaning towards a software issue. Even the people complaining about it have said the issue does not seem to apply to every app...just voice calls and/or video.

If it is a hardware issue, it doesn't seem to be because of the design.

just voice calls and headphone volume here, I haven't had any other audio issues aside from those.
