Nexus 5: there are "scratches" on screen

Re: there is these "scratches"

And yet I have *NEVER* used screen protectors and have *NEVER* had any scratches on any of my phones or tablets. But I also almost never put the phone in my pocket- it lives in a holster. And if I did put it in a pocket, you can rest assured it would be in a pocket that was absolutely clean and never had anything else in it.

Gorilla glass screens do not scratch with "normal use". But my definition of "normal use" does not include storing it in a dirty pocket or throwing it in a bag or whatnot. It can and will scratch from "improper storage".

I think "normal use" varies widely amongst different people. I would never put my phone in my front jeans pocket and that would be normal use. Some would never put their phone anywhere else...or at least would prefer not to. Again, Gorilla Glass makes the glass more durable but I can imagine a lot of folks have "normal use" scenarios that would easily scratch it. I'd like to see some flagship phones with using synthetic sapphire. I'd certainly be willing to pay a premium for it. Until then tempered glass protectors it is for "My preciouses".

I always put my phone in my front pocket. So for me, it is normal use. I put other stuff in my pocket. Sometimes keys too.

Exactly. ...and I'm sure you care just as much about your phone as the next person.

Even if you are careful, drops can happen. I had a case on my note 2, but it just happened to drop face down and there was something sharp that impacted the screen, creating a deep scratch. After that I put on a screen protector.

The one time I didn't have a screen protector on my phone, a Note 2 (I'd always used screen protectors on all my phones in the past)...the one time I didn't I ended up with a slight scratch and it bothered me so much I sold the phone ASAP.

My Nexus 5 has cracks through the screen from direct impact (aren't street curbs the best?), but I've noticed that the Gorilla Glass 3 does seem to resist scratches fairly well. In response to the fine scratches on your screen, I'll say three things in addition to the advice already given:

1) Those 'fine' scratches probably aren't deep enough to cause discoloration or distortion when the screen is on, but I'd bet that without the Gorilla Glass that would be the case.
2) If, at some point, the scratches do become visually disruptive during normal use, a screen protector very well may reduce (or eliminate) that effect. I don't like them (and don't use them), but they can be useful in this regard.
3) They aren't likely to cause you any problems down the road unless there's something in particular that is repeatedly adding these scratches.

I recently saw a light scratch on the screen of my replacement device. I'm not worried about it - installed a screen protector (which I should have done when I got it) and called it a day.
