Hey all! Hoping you can help. I will try to be as detailed as possible, so here goes.

I am trying to sideload the OTA update for Marshmallow on my Nexus 6. Currently on the latest version of Lollipop (with the latest security update included).

I have the proper files, but the problem I am having is when I reboot my device to recovery mode, it disappears from device manager and ADB does not detect any devices.

It works fine while booted normaly or at the bootloader screen, but the minute I go to recovery the device disappears from Device Manager and can't be detected. I verified that its nowhere in Device Manager, checked for other devices, or hidden devices and it just never shows up.

I have Win10 on my desktop, have tried several cables and several USB ports on my computer. Any other options? Any way to force the device to get detected by my PC in recovery mode?

My device is also LOCKED - Its my understanding I don't need to unlock the device just to sideload.

This does not appear to be "driver" related because the device does not show up in device manager, so I can't uninstall/reinstall the driver. Windows does not detect the device while in recovery mode.

I have pulled the cable and plugged back in, but doesn't show up in device manager.

After pressing sideload from adb, pull the plug from your ohine and plug in again. Then go to device manager on PC and update the android driver. There should be a yellow triangle next to android. Then proceed with the side load.

There is nothing to"install" there, when I plug in the device I can point to that download to install the driver, but when in recovery mode, the device doesn't show up in device manager.

Tried that, but the device still isn't showing in device manager. it acts like nothing is plugged in. Is there a windows setting or another setting on the phone that I am missing? Some developer option?

The issue isn't the drivers. The issue is GOOGLE. There is no excuse whatsoever for consumer owners of the Nexus 6 to have not received the Marshmallow OTA update by now. The fact that 99% haven't is PATHETIC. As a consequence, novice users are attempting the convoluted sideloading and unlocking process in a valiant attempt to update the Nexus 6. Again, I will never, ever waste another dime on an Android device and I will discourage anyone from making the same mistake I made. Android is doomed. You can thank Google for that. BTW, my iPhone 6S Plus arrives November 2nd. PEACE.

As opposed to a non-google device, like HTC or something? Waiting 6months to a year?

Head to the nearest Apple Store in your area. Google is totally FOS. I've given up.

As a former iPhone owner I must say their hardware is beautiful. Its the software that sucks. And having to do everything through iTunes is too restricting.

It's the driver installation.

Your phone has two different communication modes and protocols. One while in normal operation using the debug bridge, and another while in recovery or other engineering mode using the fastboot protocol. Sideloading through recovery requires that both protocols be recognized and enabled through the Windows USB driver.

You have the ADB portion running properly. If your phone isn't recognized in recovery, the fastboot portion isn't installed or configured correctly.

I'm not a Windows user, so I'm not sure where to begin troubleshooting. Hopefully, someone can chime in and help.

Put the phone in the "apply update from adb" mode and then unplug and replug the USB.

My computer then recognized the phone and I was able to manually select the adb driver for it in device manager.

Then adb sideload file.zip and it worked.

This is what I had to do as well.

I had the same problem. When I pull the cable and reattach the Nexus 6 reappears in Device manager but with an exclamation point saying the drivers don't work. When I try to force the Google USB driver I get an error message that the driver is not correct for the device. I did find a work around but it looked pretty onerous. I decided, instead, to try it on my iMac. It was a PITA to figure out how to use terminal window and I never figured out how to move the file from the downloads to the same directory as the adb files. But, eventually I figured out how to put the correct path in the adb sideload command and I sideloaded the OTA. Even with the Mac I had to unplug and replug in the phone when it went to sideload mode to get the computer to see it.

I think if windows 10 is like windows 8.1 is The first step is to . DISABLE Driver Signature Verification

I'm not on widows 10 but windows 8.1. But that is the first thing I had to do before I even tried to get the drivers set up

But also since your device isn't showing in device manager, that would indicate it is a driver issue.

I've gone through all these dance steps over and over expecting that one time the freaking Nexus would be recognized. Nope, not once! It's a freaking pain in the arse, I should have Marshmallow but for TMO doing who knows what to hold up the process.
