Nexus 6 vs. iPhone 6+ - Help me decide.

I am a long time Android user (first Android phone was the original Motorola Droid) who had brief flirtations with both iOS (about 4 months) and Windows Phone (off and on for about a year). The main reasons I stayed on Android over iOS were the lack of large screens and the out dated design. iOS 7 dealt with the design, the iPhone 6+ dealt with the screen size. Couple that with the high price of the Nexus 6, and I am seriously considering replacing my dying Nexus 5 with an iPhone 6+. I love the hardware, iOS 8 looks good, and iOS still gets most apps before Android. Now, the only thing really holding me back is the amount of money I have invested in Android apps. Convince me I should stay on Android and buy a Nexus 6 (the only device that checks every single box I want in an Android phone).

What apps are you concerned with getting first? I try to only use services that are multi platform so I can keep my options open.

I enjoy amateur astronomy, and while there are some decent astronomy apps on Android, the best ones are iOS only. So that is one aspect of that. Aside from that, I can't name specific apps as I cannot see into the future to see what is going to be coming out and become popular in the next 12-18 months.

Re: Nexus 6 vs. iPhone 6+. Help me.

I think it's easy:

Do you enjoy having the ability to customize or do you enjoy having portions of your phones locked down? Do you enjoy widgets or do you not enjoy widgets? Do you like more options or less options?

Answer those questions and your choice will be clear.

Re: Nexus 6 vs. iPhone 6+. Help me.

If the Nexus 6 checks all of the boxes for you, then why wouldn't you go with it if it has everything you're looking for?

Is the 6+ worth another $100-$200 to have access to a couple of apps that you use occasionally? Serious question.

Also, while iOS 8 brings some much needed updates and features, I think Lollipop is going to widen the functionality gap between Android and iOS again IMO.

That is sort of what has lead me to this point. I don't root/ROM my phones anymore, I don't sideload apps, I don't theme, etc. I don't use widgets and beyond a few folders I don't customize my home screen that much anymore. As far as choice, there is only one Android phone I'd be willing to put money down for, so is there really that much choice?

The apps plus the design (which I quite like) are, to me, worth the money. Looking at iOS8 and Lollipop (which I did use daily for about 6 months, admittedly not in its final form), the software is almost a wash at this point. Neither OS is bad, they are just different.

Re: Nexus 6 vs. iPhone 6+. Help me.

This may seem like a terrible reason, but I got rid of the 6+ simply because it doesn't have an actual back button. With a screen that large, it's a necessity to use two hands just to hit the back button since they're usually in the top left corner. I have a note 3, and I use one hand and scroll through things, and then just hit the back button with my thumb. Not to mention you can't go back out of apps. Like if I'm in an app and open an email or text, you have to go back to the home screen or open multi tasking just to get back to what you were doing.

The back button thing is legitimate, but I use multi-tasking to switch between apps now anyways, so that aspect of it isn't a big deal to me. The browser is really the only place I use the back button regularly.

High price of nexus 6??? but iPhone 6+ is much more pricier than Nexus 6.

if you are talking about contract then nexus 6 also has contract option which would be cheaper than the $300 price for iphone 6+

Re: Nexus 6 vs. iPhone 6+. Help me.

5.96 versus 5.5 inch screen is 17% more viewing area in approximately the same form factor (except the nexus 6 is thicker and won't bend in your pocket )...

So you don't utilize the main attractions (IMO) to Android. I love all those things I listed and that is why I will never go to a software that doesn't give me that choice. I like my freedom and to you, it doesn't seem as important. For now, it's as simple as which phone do you find more appealing.

Like someone mentioned, the "back" button is a big thing for me also.

Good luck in your decision!

I vote to get whatever you want instead of getting whatever people convince you to get. Nobody here is in your head so we don't know which you'll like better. Just go with whichever you think is worth it and don't worry so much of what other people like.

Yes, I know the iPhone is more expensive. However, both are above the price I would be able to pay outright, so I'll be doing an installment plan on either one, and both are within the realm of what I'm willing to pay in installments. In the past it was a choice between $200-$300 for an on contract iPhone and $350 for an off contract Nexus. Now its a choice between an (estimated) $27/mth for a Nexus and $35 a month for a 64 GB iPhone.

Pure hardware, I am in love with the iPhone 6+. I'm just worried I'll switch to iOS and not like it. Long story short, I'm not sure what I want, so I posted this thread here and on iMore to hear what others thought were good reasons to be on each OS, hoping it could help sway me one way or the other.

Re: Nexus 6 vs. iPhone 6+. Help me.

My wife has a 6+, it's really nice, very fast and super smooth. I don't like the way it's starts all icons on the top of the page and the back button also on the top.
It's definitely a two handed phone because of that.

This makes it sound as if you're more familiar currently with android. If this is correct, I say go for the iPhone, run the hell out of it during your return period, and if you like it then keep running it. If its not working out, make the switch to the Nexus.

You do realize that if you're in safari and just swipe the screen from left to right you go back right? You don't have to use the lower left arrow if you don't want to.

IOS has widgets and third party keyboards.

You are forgetting swipe to go back or forward in iOS
