Nexus 7 battery exclamation / percent unknown

Recently I purchased a replacement battery for my nexus 7 after I could not get my old battery to accept a charge. I ordered a C11-ME370T from eBay. It appeared to charge fine but it would not display percent remaining, only an exclamation point.

The replacement battery came from a US eBay seller "Mallforpower". The battery skin actually had an ASUS logo on it, but it had been sharpied over. So clearly this was meant to be a counterfeit battery but the US seller apparently wasn't cool with it. So I paid for a generic battery and received .. a generic battery.

I tore both old and new batteries down to compare. The difference was readily apparent. My original Nexus 7 battery had a good charging board with a bunch of chips on it. The replacement battery had a dirty soldering job and completely different layout. The battery communication circuitry wasn't present or working, hence the exclamation point.

The solution I tried was simple but appears to have worked. I soldered the new lithium cell to the old battery controller and so far so good. The tablet shows a percent remaining, although I suspect it may need to be recalibrated, but we'll see. Thought it was worth mentioning in case anyone else comes across this problem after replacing their battery.
