I have been battling with a car charging issue for a while and finally isolated the problem yesterday. I am using Sygic for navigation and found that the app was draining the battery faster than what the charger could supply. I swapped out different chargers and I finally realized that if I used the original USB cable that came with the N7 that it actually charged faster than the app drained.
Strange but true. In an 8 hour day the OEM cable allowed it to drain to 30% battery. After I connected the original cable it finally started to regain charge slowly.

Does anybody have input on this?

Possible the OEM charging cable shorts the data pins? Some specialty usb cables do this to tell the device to charge. I bought a couple for high amp wall chargers and they seem to charge faster on some Androids.

Not every USB cable is created equal. Some are definitely higher quality than others. If you find that one isn't working and you've isolated it to be that specific cable, try a different one.
