Nexus 7 LTE....as a phone

Right now I am on T-Mobile for $30 a month service is terrible and I need to switch to ATT. I had this idea of getting an LTE Nexus 7 with a bluetooth headset and using it as a phone with Grooveip/Google Voice and hangouts for messaging friends. Do you guys think this would work. I realize I would look a little silly using it and I would sacrifice the camera (5mp isn't great) but would it really work? ATT's 3gb a month plan is only $30.

I already use the gv/grooveip and hangouts on my phone now. I would be dumping a real phone number and just using my google number.

My worry is that Grooveip didn't work so well on my Nexus 4 but works great on my S4 GPE...all I had to do was edit the speaker and mic volume no echo cancellation needed. Would a decent bluetooth headset work well? Does a cellphone have any different hardware to process voip that a tablet won't have?

This is a pretty big gamble given the cost as a Nexus 7 LTE could pay for several months of ATT service.

Will it work? Yes. VOIP is VOIP whether over wifi or a data cell connection. But, you will still pay dearly for an LTE tablet account, probably more than a regular tablet account. Data is far more expensive than regular cell voice and text service and all the carriers charge more for tablet data access than they do for phone data access.

With ATT I can pay $30 of 3gb of data. To get 3gb of day with a cell plan which is all I care about is $70 minimum.

I thought about doing too OP.

My T-Mobile service is not terrible like yours, so I'm not I'm a hurry to switch up.

Groove IP seems unreliable for the most part sadly. Vonage is pretty good for making calls but not receiving calls.


I'm curious to know how this goes for you.

Ended up shelving the idea. I love my S4 GPE and didn't want to give up my brand new phone with it's perfect size and great camera. There were too many situations I could think of where using a 7in phone would just be a big hassle.
