nexus 7 sleep mode

I have read the manual over & over, read all the forums, asked search in forums and even asked google and have not found the answer in plain English and the exact procedure to have the nexus go into & out of the sleep modes & what happens when it is in sleep modes. Every time I ask this questions it keeps telling about covers that make it sleep and you know what I bought my nexus 7 last week and also the cover at $19 using Google Play & the cover did not have the lid that makes it sleep. Any answers would be appreciated jimjoh

What exactly is your question?
To make your device go to sleep just press the power button. To wake it up press the power button again. The cover that you have purchased from the Play Store does NOT have the sleep/wake function. I would recommend purchasing the Poetic Slimline case, which is what I have and I have been very impressed with it. It also has the sleep/wake function, meaning if you close the cover, the devices goes to sleep, when you take the cover off it wakes up.

I am sorry Ravynmagi but I thought my question was clear if you read it. How does some people say deep sleep but other than the magnetic cover is there a way to have deep sleep. I want to know in the maybe different sleep modes how do you turn them on & what is running & what is turned off. The reason this is important to me as my wife has great hearing & even though I had my unit in sleep it kept talking during the night & she was pretty upset with me this morning. I have terrible hearing so I heard nothing. That is not asking too much & if it is not important to you stop reading my post. jimjoh

What do you mean it kept "talking" My Nexus 7 never talked with me. I don't believe there is such a thing as a deep sleep, but I'm not sure of that so I could be wrong. Also, that last sentence was unnecessary. We are here to help if needed but you did not need to say that if it's not important to you get lost. Just because your question was clear to you doesn't mean it's clear to everybody, especially if you don't use proper grammar.

However, if what you're talking about is getting notifications during the night that wakes your wife up, then simply turn the volume all the way down to silent mode OR turn it off....

All "deep sleep" is is a description of the state of the tablet when it is a) in standby, and b) there are no services that are actively syncing data at that moment.

As an example, if you have the facebook app installed and have it set to sync data once an hour. If you leave your tablet alone for 2 hours, it will be in deep sleep for the entire time, except for when it hits that 1 hour mark and it syncs your facebook data. it will sync the data, then go back into "deep sleep"

this of course assumes that the tablet is set to do nothing but sync facebook, which doesn't happen obviously. the more things you have that sync data while the device is asleep, and the more often it is set to sync, the less time your device will be in "deep sleep"

People make way too much of a big deal about "deep sleep". Yes, you'll get better battery life with it but that's only because it is not syncing any data.

If you're looking for a case that puts your device's screen to sleep when you close it and wakes it up when you open it, there are several (in a variety of colors) offered on eBay, ranging from $6.95 to $9.95, with free shipping. I have one and it works great. Even came with a stylus and screen protector. The product descriptions will tell you if they have the on/off feature. I haven't had a problem with my N7 turning off when the cover is folded completely behind it.

Just turn the tablet around in the case with the on/off facing outward edge of case. That should fix it.
