Nexus 9 no imei

I have a nexus 9 that I bought at best buy a few months ago and it's recently been acting up. I called htc to have it rma'd, but when they asked what the imei was my tablet simply said "unknown". Why is this?

Do you have the WiFi only Nexus 9 or the LTE model?

If it's WiFi only, it won't have an IMEI. IMEI is for devices that are used on mobile networks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Mobile_Station_Equipment_Identity

It'll have an IMEI if it's the LTE model.

My Nexus 7 is WiFi only. Notice I don't have an IMEI.
