What happened to the good old days when you could get a good spec phone with bare bone android for a nice price (3-400$ range)

Was that not the intent for Nexus devices?

We gotta see what the Nexus 5 offers. I almost bought a Nexus 4 since the price drop, but I'm not leaving Verizon.

The line is doing quite well. The Nexus 7 (2013) was recently released, all Nexus devices have been updated to JB 4.3 and the Nexus 5 will be released sometime in October. Just gotta have faith... lol.
