Nexus One on AT&T reviews

Hi everyone,

I am a current iPhone 3GS user and am looking to switch to the Nexus One for AT&T. I've read this site from time to time, but have found mixed comments about the phone, MMS, etc.

I was hoping I could hear some personal feedback and opinions from everyone about their experience. And anything you could provide to further convince me to do this would be greatly appreciated! Haha.

I used the TMO version on ATT edge for a couple months, and recently got the ATT 3G version. Its worked flawlessly with both of them and I couldn't be happier switching from previously using BB's and iPhone.

Whether you personally will like the OS, I couldn't tell you, but if you like the iPhone and want more options/choice in how you use your phone, then I think you'll enjoy it very much.

I have a Google Nexus One with at&t Mobility's 3G frequencies (850/1900/2100MHz) and I have been very happy with the device so far.

The Bluetooth stack seems a bit wonky and there are few other quirks, but overall the device is excellent IMHO. I guess that Google will fix the larger quirks in the future or at least I hope that they will. I came over from Sony Ericsson and they released firmware updates fairly regularly and the original issues were resolved over time through firmware upgrades.

Overall, the signal has been strong almost everywhere I have been and the few places where reception has been meh, I was still able to accomplish whatever I needed on EDGE. Using different speed tests, I have consistently been seeing 3G speeds in the 2Mbps DOWN and 1.3Mbps Up area, pretty good IMHO.

Here is a video review I made of the Nexus One and other then the small issues shown in the review its not too bad, the 3G is much faster and lower pings (I sold the tmo 3g version for the att 3G version) the keyboard for typing isn't as good as the iphone so thats why I dont use my nexus as much but the features and options are great, screen looks better then iphone's as well, its not as fast as it should be but with the beta updates I've heard its been fixed already.

I just made the switch (sold my iPhone 3GS on ebay this weekend).
They're both great phones. I've had no trouble with the N1. Yes, as most people have pointed out the N1 is a "little rough around the edges".
But for me, the biggest incentive was being able to leave the Apple ecosystem. I just hated they way Apple locked down what apps could be installed. Plus, I hated iTunes and how you were forced to use it to get anything on your phone. I LOVE being able to connect the N1 to any computer and mount it as an external drive and drag/drop my media.

flash it with the Cyanogen mod and the rough edges and BT issues will smooth out.
I have a TMO version on AT&T and it has been flawless. I am about to sell it so I can get the AT&T 3G bands... I like it that much.

I use Google Nav, Shopper, and MyTracks almost daily. I could care less about iPhone 4.0 (and I had all 3 versions of the phone) They aren't going to offer anything new that I don't already get with Android.

You guys have all helped out tremendously. Thank you verrrry much. I have read reviews on this site and they've been terrific, but getting actual comments from everyone here makes me feel better. I'll be checking out that YouTube link as well after my classes. I enjoy the iPhone a ton. I love the smooth transitions more than anything. Its very polished.. but it is also very boring at this point and I want more options without the jailbreak.

A million "it's the best device" threads isn't gonna change whether you like it or not when you do get your time with the device. It would have been a lot better if they had the phones in store to help in some (not all) the decision making.

If someone told me Apple was going to stop making iPhones, the Nexus One is that good that it wouldn't bother me at all. The apps will get there, but I don't use that many and the ones I do (aside from street fighter iv), I've found in the market (or at least one that's similar).

I love my N1 for AT&T. I have not have a single problem yet. Only issue I have with the N1 overall is the limited number of apps I can have. I have 20 apps on the phone I use all the time and I only have enough room for about 5 more. Makes me very very sad because I love this N1.

Use the new Cyanogen Rom it has the ability to install app's to your SD card so you will be able to expand your storage

To be honest, I would but I don't yet understand how to set it up or where to get the needed software. Will it still get the auto updates from Google for the OS? I just haven't taken the time to sit down and teach this all to myself just yet.

I have a 16 gig SD card in my N1 now so, not worried about running out of room for now hehe.

All the info you need on how to root your phone is found here as of right now unless im mistaken you can't install apps to your SD card and run them on the stock 2.1 OS it's a feature google plans to include in a future release but with the Custom rom you will have the ability to do so now and yes you can go back to the stock rom and get updates as normal if you choose to do so other wise once a new update comes out soon after a new custom rom will be released.

Definitely understand where you're coming from though. I would definitely recommend it and for you to give it the 14 (or 30) days to see if it's something you'd like and want to keep.

I yawned at it too, but keep in mind that more will probably come for WWDC. That's exactly what happened last year... video recording being one of them.

Yes, all you have to do is pop the sim in and it worked flawlessly.

20 app limit? Not sure where you got that, but I had around 40 apps 2 days ago in which I deleted about half of them. So the limit goes with your internal memory. With custom roms, quite a few of them have Apps2SD which allows you to store apps on your SD (self explanatory).

ive had an iphone since it came out and i switched over to the Nexus One (still have an iPhone tho) and i like the Nexus..The navigaton app is my favorite, the only issue i have is the screen feels "slippery" when i swipe and the keyboard sucks in portrait mode (in landscape mode i like it i can type alot better). The AMOLED screen is gorgeous, the Snapdragon is blazing fast!
