Will the Nexus Player receive the Android 5.1 update? I looked all over legitimate Android websites and couldn't find anything. My personal opinion is that the Nexus Player is going to have a short consumer lifespan. There have only been a handful of new apps since it's release. I love my Nexus Player. I have Netflix, Pluto TV, Boat Browser and Kodi. As of now the Nexus Player's future doesn't look promising.

I believe its early days for most of these devices, whether it Google, Apple, Roku, or Amazon. New hardware will come out along with new features (murphy's law).

When I bought the NP I was expecting a 2 year lifespan, and think it will get much more. The main reason is not Android TV, personally navigating with a remote is a PITA. The silver lining for this device in my opinion is the custom ROM Lollirock.

I have installed it and it runs a full lollipop 5 UI, with playstore. I have all the apps you have installed (well except Boat I use Chrome) and it runs well. You do need a mouse, I have mine connected to USB hub from another android box set up I had and everything works the same. The nice thing is once you have it installed you can stay on this rev forever (or at least until apps are supported). The developer is looking at releasing at 5.1 build. It's pure android with work done on what Google has neutered for android TV.

So far it looks like its heading the same route as google tv. Definitely disappointed with the lack of support on both the os and the play store

Edit- Forgot to mention that there are lots of apps in the play store I can only find by manually searching for them which doesn't make much sense as well

It looks likes the 5.1 update is out

This provides a good reference on apps

I am really hoping that the 5.1 update will make the Nexus Player more for tv. There are system apps that have no business being there such as: Calendar Storage, Contacts Storage, Google Contacts Sync, Google Japanese Input and PHONE (Really... phone... WHY). It's like Google just slaps the mobile Android OS on this device without considering what the Nexus Player is for. Just my thoughts......

Take a look at what I stated in Zahlgor's post and give your thoughts.

I am not a developer of any sort, but believe teh components you mention above are embedded into the OS and Google felt it wasn't worth taking out. I think they use the core Android OS and limit certain functionality for Android TV. Versus developing a separate OS for Android TV. This makes sense as it provides one code base to deal with and enables them to easily apply upgrades. The amount of memory these take is probably not much, as I haven't really had any memory issues. The more annoying feature of Android is applications loading into memory that have not been launched.

I use advanced Task manager to clear memory before I run kodi.

As mentioned above I have moved away from the lean back launcher that comes with NP for the custom rom lollirock. The developer has released a 5.1 candidate. I just find the remote navigation too time consuming for my use case.
