Okay, so I recently came back from a trip to Costa Rica and had quite the panic moment with my phone.
I entirely forgot I had my phone on my hip and jumped into a pool with it. I basically did a few hand stands in the pool and even smoked a cigar before I realized I had it. It was in the water for a while and as you can guess, I FREAKED!
Upon notice, I immediately took the phone apart and placed it in the sun. No, a bag of rice was not immediately available as I was on vacation and not at home. After an hour of it tanning in the sun I decided to try it out. Of course, I pretty much expected nothing to happen but BOOM! The pink unicorn boot screen never looked so good!
Everything worked. It charged. It functioned. It responded to all my inputs and I was happy! Checked the camera out and realized there was moisture in there. . Pictures are now blurry as hell. Thankfully, the moisture must have escaped overnight because in the next morning I was taking beautiful shots again.
As a side note, I don't understand why people knock on the camera. It took AMAZING pictures during the trip and I was beyond content with it.
Anyway, back to the story. Everything worked out except the ONE thing I could test. The cellular radios (no service in C.R.)
I get back to the states and quickly disable Airplane mode to see... nothing. No bars. But then my email notifications pop up. Weird... I pull the battery. Nothing. I then realize something. If I received emails, then I should have data. I run a speed test and get typical LTE speeds (22mbps down). Still, I have no bars. Try to make a phone call and get hit with a "Mobile Service Not Available". I can check Facebook, view web pages, and do everything data related but can't make a phone call.
I switch from LTE/CDMA to CDMA only to see if that does anything. Yes, it does do something. It kills my data connection. That's when it hit me. My CDMA radio fried but the LTE radio survived. Switch it back to LTE/CDMA and I am good to go.
So, that's my story. An interesting tidbit about this which may fascinate some of you is this. At work, my 4G always gets knocked down to 3G. Today, being that 3G was not an option, my phone stayed connected to the LTE network, albeit how little service it received. I'm sure someone out there smarter than me can perhaps use this information to figure out why some Nexus (Nexii?) drop data connections so often.
Oh, and yes, I've done just about everything to try to make my mobile connection work. I've even flashed various radios, but I still am open to suggestions.
The first uploaded photo is a screenshot of my signal tracker application. As you can see, the SIM is good to go and I'm getting good signal with it. The EVDO radio is dead. Network shows it's searching for service yet I am connected to Verizon 4G. My signal bars always remain like that.
The second photo is just an example of the beauty of the camera and of items that make me happy =)
