So my 7 should be here any minute now. I was wondering what everyone did after turning it on? Did you go straight to unlock/root? Just turn on and start playing with your 7? Or hook it up to charge and leave it alone? I'm a real believer in letting new devices charge and not messing with the "memory" of a new battery. Always hear different opinions on this.

I'm not sure anyone can prove memory effect, much less on LiOn's. The entire memory effect theory comes from a NASA study that has little relevance to standard use and it was based on NiCads if I recall. Many manufacturers and experts have decided that NiMhs don't suffer from it and the only way LiOns will is if the software gets out of balance.

Anyway, my nephews was DEAD when it arrived so I had to charge it a few minutes before powering it on. then I had to mess with it plugged in.

I plan on ulocking and rooting mine before doing anything else. That way when I activate it and get the 4.1.1 update I will know that I didn't bork something in the process.

From what I read once you turn it on & connect to a Wi-Fi signal you should receive 1 or 2 updates for jellybean. After that I think most play around with it for a bit then charge it.

I was always under the impression you have to completely drain the battery the first time, do a complete charge and drain again. This somehow conditions the battery. Not sure if that line of thinking applies to tablets.

Just in case anyone is curious my understanding is that NASA found that NiCads that are constantly charges at 90% will eventually lose all but that 10 percent. Then it was found that what was actually happening was a drastic voltage drop at that 90 percent point and that the battery would regain voltage if the device was able to stay on. This also took years of charging and discharging to the natural life of the NiCad made it a moot point except for situation where batteries can't be easily changed, hence NASA.

That theory if I'm remembering right is because LiOn's use software to read the power level and report percentages. Draining it then topping it off give the software a better idea of both extremes. That's why some people say you should drain them every month or two as well. There are apps that are supposed to test your battery life by putting it through a few hours of intense use, but I never tried one. I'm never that far from a plug to worry about it.
