NFC not working

While on gingerbread whenever i tried to activate nfc it gives "an error occurred" message. Yesterday upgraded my android to 4.1.1 hoping that update will solve nfc issue, but when i go through settings all i can see is nfc option checked but not available along with android beam....What does this indicate a hardware problem???
