i was reading where the new 3.0 will only support screens 4.0 and larger that have 1240x720.

from what i have seen the EPIC screen will not support this.

im confused now, do i wait to see what 3.0 brings in just a few short months?

i do want the EPIC as i have to have the regular keypad for nothing less then lack of dexterity.

if i have read wrong, please let me know as i want this phone.

I was shocked to hear that spec too, but I'm betting that the 1240x720 requirement has to be a maximum pixel count that will be supported, rather than a minimum. If it were a minimum, I think every existing cell phone would be excluded.

Also, I think this stuff is really just rumor at this point, anyway.

I posted this in the other thread where you talked about this, but I'll do it here as well so that you don't start a riot or something:

Those were all just rumors that google debunked recently. Even then, the rumors were that the device would have to have a 4" screen (which the epic does), and that it'll now "be able" to support up to 1240x720, not it would require it. There is absolutely NO current evidence that suggests that these top-of-the-line phones wouldn't be upgradeable to 3.0 at some point in the future. It's practically ridiculous to imagine google upgrading their OS so that no older phones could use it...that just won't happen :/

posts have clarified that the translation from russian to english was very bad and inaccurate.
now, on to resolutions. The maximum resolution the galaxy s can handle is unknown and the resolution it is coming out with may very well be a limitation of the operating system.

I am certain that even if Samsung doesn't port gingerbread over, somebody else will.

I doubt too those specs are the min. There are a only two android devices out now that have 4" screens or higher and with the release of the galaxy phones I doubt google will disregard these devices. I'm sure gingerbread will come out for these phones, it's just a matter of time when the companies such as Samsung, sprint, at&t, verizon, and tmobile will release them.

I wonder if this thread really deserves to continue. The whole thing is well intended, but it is based on a misinterpretation of a rumor with a title that looks frightening, but really carries no valid information, IMHO.

Yeah, I'm actually shocked there isn't as much activity on the Galaxy S forums considering how good this phone really is. The Evo forums had much, much more hype way earlier than release.

Gingerbread isn't until January - are we really talking about wanting a completly overhauled UI/OS when Froyo for Nexus is still getting weekly builds?

Gingerbread is 6months away, samsung will sit on it for at least 2 months, and 4 months later, many of us will be looking to upgrade the phone because undoubtedly, the phones will be multicore by then. As much as I'd like to see all updates pushed to ALL phones, many may not really need gingerbread on their current phone if tech continues to accelerate at it's current speed.

silly concern.. going by what you are saying, none of the smartphones out there will run 3.0.. so if that's the case, who cares!? just pick a phone and roll with it.

I'm saying we have no idea what 3.0 will require and it's so far off- YES who cares...so as you put it: pick a phone and roll with it.

I say we worry about froyo first. Gingerbread won't be made available until December, and even then, give the companies/carriers 3-5 months to get a working Gingerbread out to the devices.
Of course, if this phone gathers a nice dev community, we could expect and emulator port much sooner than that. :P

I would be more worried about Froyo before December also. I'd be happy if that was the only update to come to this phone.

Taylormah- that's such a lie it hurts. 2ghz processor and 1080P video recording? Nope and Nope- not by Q1 of next year- not to mention I doubt Android 3.0 on NEXUS by that early much less on a 3rd party phone.

I almost would like to see Epic delayed until froyo launches with it and Adobe Flash the more I think about it... but then that means the phone is delayed till when?

brandonc-I realized it was a rumor but the lied specs are still something that would make a phone "ideal" - at least for the current generation of phones. A phone with these specs may very well be a reality by late 2011 or early 2012, who knows.
Samsung has promised 2.2, and with the phone available in so many carriers around the world, they wont back off from it. Like you said, hard question is - when??

It is a lie. Google confirmed that hte rumors weren't true. Get over it people.
