No active notification from text messages.

I am not getting any notification when I receive a text message. No active notification nor an indication on the upper bar.
I have Messages selected in the 'Active Notifications' settings and within the apps internal settings 'Notifications' is on.
Same issue when using Google Hangouts for text, all settings indicate I should be getting notified, but the only way I know if a text was received is to open the app and check.

Found an additional 'Show notifications' check box within Settings > Apps > Hangouts which fixed the issue.

Im having that problem but with sending messages thu hangouts not messaging. All notifcations are on but only get the message when I actually click into the hangouts app.

You have checked, settings, active display, manage notifications types, that hangouts is checked? Chris

Found an additional 'Show notifications' check box within Settings > Apps > Hangouts which fixed the issue.

Do you have your Hangout's set is your default SMS app?
That setting is in the Hangout apps setting right at the top.Since when you ticked that box and it fixed your issue ,it makes me think you might have.

Okay....
I got a sound upon receipt of text! I went to "hangouts" then clicked " open by default"
well....that worked once but upon subsequent texts it didn't work.
