No automatic switch to 3G / 4G while on WIFI?

If I have my phone WIFI on and connected to my home router, and my cable modem loses connection, the Razr will not try to use the 3G to get browsing data. It just times out. I have to check my cable modem to discover that I've lost home internet and then shut off my phone WIFI. Then wait a minute and try surfing again. Even my old Blackberry Storm 2 would switch over automatically.

I can tell which connection the phone is trying to use because the active connection icons turn blue and the inactive remains white. If I have a WIFI connection to the router, even with no internet access, the WIFI icon on the phone.e always remains blue and the 3G always remains white.

Is this a known bug or limitation?

While it makes us crazy, think about it. All the phone knows is that it has solid wifi signal, not what's behind that signal.

I understand, but like I said even my old Blackberry Storm 2 was able to figure out that it had no WiFi internet data received and then pulled from 3G without turning WiFi off.

My ISP was out performing maintenance, so I lost home internet.

If that happens more than once every 10 years, then you might think about a better ISP.

Anyways, I've never had that type of issue... I've even started on Wifi, then traveled down the road, lost wifi and it's just picked up on LTE automatically without having to turn anything off or on.

Don't I wish..... I pay for 12 Mb and typically get around 1 or less.... Been complaining for years but there is no other choice for high speed internet around here. High speed- it is to laugh....

Oh, and for the rest of your post- my phone behaves the same way. If I start on WIFI and then leave home, it switches to the 3G/4G automatically when I lose the WIFI signal. It's just when I have a WIFI connection with no throughput that I get nothing on the phone until I shut WIFI off. Could someone test this for me on their phone? Connect to your home WIFI router and then disconnect the ethernet cable between the router and your modem temporarily. Then go see if your phone will pull internet pages while still connected to WIFI.

That isn't something unique to the RAZR. I have a shortcut and widget set up so I can switch mine off and on.

What you are describing is different than what the op seems to be talking about.

Most cities will only contract with a single service provider, so simply getting another ISP is not an option. Repeating that over and over will not change that.

So it's normal then? I would consider it a bug. I have the same shortcut widget, but like I said even my old Storm 2 could figure this out, and that was a dumb phone compared to the Razr....

I'm not sure if it is a bug, or simply a design flaw.

At least in my experience, so long as my phone is receiving that wifi signal it will not switch. That is across three different Android devices each using different versions. My Bionic is on stock Gingerbread, Xoom stock Honeycomb and Nexus stock ICS.

Gotcha... guess it's just something I'll have to live with and hope they change some day. I could imagine situations where you want to connect your phone to a network but that network does not have internet access- that means you have to routinely disconnect to do anything internet related on the phone. Seems to be a limitation that has no real purpose.
