No more room for apps?!

Sorry if I come of a bit negative in this post. I'm just a bit confused as my understanding is there is 16GB of internal capacity and on top of that whatever size SD card we have. However I get a warning that there is no room left to install more apps and update existing apps despite all that is installed only totals up to a little over 400MB. I suspect this may be something similar to the early days of webOS where they setup some arbitrary limit due to their choice in how the file system was setup. I'm aware apps can be put on the SD card however I don't see the point if I am supposed to have 16GB internal. If I have no other choice than to put apps on SD card then I'll need to know what ones are best put there or whatnot. And then want a solution to use the internal space otherwise what is the point of it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: No more room for apps ?!?

There is actually only 1GB of internal storage. the 460MB is for us to use and the rest is for the OS. It does come with a 16GB sd card tho.

Re: No more room for apps ?!?

I am a bit confused with this too. I have moved ALL Apps possible to my SD card and I am still pretty close to filling up my internal memory? i dont dont understand how this is possible.

I have downloaded norton utilities & memory booster lite to help me manage the apps that were sitting in internal memory (now moved to sd) but it doesnt seems to free anything up. I am sure there is someone out there that is super smart with this and can give us some recommendations on what to do about this.

please help!!

Re: No more room for apps ?!?

Apps still load in memory even if you dont use them.
You have 1GB of internal memory. Of that 400 or so of it is available for you to use, the rest is for your ROM.
Even if you move all of your apps to SD, thats still only storing them. Every app running still uses memory. Thats internal memory. That Norton app and memory booster app, yup those are eating up memory as well.
Also keep in mind the low memory alarm is set off at i think 10 or 15% of zero state.
Are you actually getting an error message or did you just see you had 400 megs of memory left and though you had 16GB?

I am currently using 438 of 498MB internal memory and 5.81 of 14.73BG on my SD card.

When I bought the phone it was advertized as having 16GB of internal storage heck if you look at samsung's site reading the specs for it they say the same thing. However if there is only 1GB of internal storage that makes much more sense as to why I get the warning I have no room left. I never even looked at the info on the device for free and used space. I simply got a total of how much space my installed stuff used. Since when I bought it due to the advertised 16GB internal storage I figured I would never need to be concerned with it. With that said then I'll need to know what apps I should move to the SD card. As I assume it is best to leave some internal and others it won't matter.

Re: No more room for apps ?!?

To come to your defense Stone Ryno you are also right. The Sammy site does show 16GB ROM / 512MB RAM and thats listed as Internal memory. Not external. Bit mistake on Samsungs part if you ask me..

Go to settings/apps click on an app and if you can move it to the sd card, it will give you that option.

Cool beans, thanks... Do the apps run off the SD card or are they simply stored there and then moved to internal memory when you open it and then removed when close? The reason I ask is I recall other platforms that is how apps on the SD card worked.

They run from the sd card, but they do use ram while they're being used. But it's still better than having them use up available ram as storage.

Be aware too, that the more apps and widgets you have on your desktop screens, the less memory you will have too. Less clutter on the screen, the better. So if you don't use certain apps alot, it's better to just go to the app drawer when you want to start it.

I've done away with all of the widgets. For the sake of RAM. But I was not aware that app icons and widgets placed on the homescreens took up internal storage in addition to the space the app takes up. I have 96 app installed and about half of them I put their icons on my homescreens. The main reason for that is so i can order them how I want to from most used to least used instead of A-Z like in the app drawer. I have 3 homescreens The default one with my most used, a 2nd one with lesser frequently used, and the 3rd with games.

I didnt know that having the apps on the start screens would eat up my storage! I will try removing them and see if this helps. this thank you!

moved most apps off my home pages but dont see much improvement in the free internal memory.

=(

RAM (Random Access Memory) = Memory, It is used as short term storage while a program is in use... The more free RAM you have the smoother your system should run

ROM (Read Only Memory) = Storage, The amount of space you have to save things, such as programs, music, pictures etc...

In other words, every program is going to take up some ROM (space on internal storage, or SD card) but memory booster apps are designed to increase RAM by killing background processes that you aren't using...(like an auto task manager basically)

Idk how much Internal storage came in the Epic offhand, but 16GB seems wayyyy too much, unless Android takes up a good 15GB...

I'd advise getting an App2Sd program and moving as many of your apps to your SD card as possible (not all apps have this capability) As for RAM, go into your Settings>Applications>Running Services to look at the background services that could possibly be eating at your RAM

I've moved as many apps as possible to the SD card. Pretty much everything except the few stock apps and one or two others. I have 177MB of internal storage free now. Which won't be a problem as long as any other apps I get can be moved to the SD card. I'm still shocked that they advertise it as having 16GB internal storage when that is definitely not true. It's a good thing apps can be put on the SD card :)

I've tried a few Add2SD apps already and none of them have actually been correct in if the app can be moved there or not. I have had so many problems with dealing with this issue, now that I have my phone running pretty smooth I'm afraid to move stuff over there now which is a total waste of external storage.

Here's the issue I had. I would read the description on the app page and if it said "App2SD" compatible, fixed etc., then I would move the app there. Problem is that once I do that and I happen to turn my phone off and then back on I can no longer find the app in the drawer and the home pages end up with either "trouble loading" or something like that or it turns into a generic android app icon and it doesn't work anymore. I once tried moving the app from the card back to the internal memory from a back up program that could actually see the app now and it started moving it over but I stopped because it seemed like it was taking too long and it ended up losing or replacing other apps.

I made the upgrade from my old phone to the Epic 4G on Aug 12, 2011 and for 2 weeks I had nothing but headaches and swapped phones out 3 times because tech could never fix one problem or the other. Finally I've been experimenting on my own, reading threads and such and now I have it running pretty much the way I'm happy with. Again, I'm afraid to move apps over now because I don't want to start all over again just in case the apps do their disappearing act again.

Maybe this would help. Could anyone tell me "specific name" must have apps that I should use that have a proven track record or working. Currently the App2SD app I am using is "App 2 SD Free" vers. 2.32 by AZSoft (Sam Lu). Actually I just did a search on this and went to their page and it says that if that happens, (obviously a known issue) go to settings>storage>unmount sd card and then mount again and it should be fine. Anyone try that?

Sorry, I'm still a SmartPhone virgin. Closest I had in the past was my last phone which was a Samsung Instinct and that was nowhere near smart or a smartphone. I'd love to be able to know if the app is choosing the programs correctly or not because I too have run into the low memory problem today. I only have about 54mg on my internal memory now so I do need to move things over if I can and if they will work. Problem is, all 3 App2SD apps I've used have all said it was safe even when the description page of the app says not to move it there. Thanks in advance.

Jim

P.S. I am running on Froyo EC05 (2.2.1). If people are running Froyo will their firmware also be 2.2.1 or do they vary?

Did you have the media scanner disabled that runs right after booting up?

I just use the Options > Applications > Manage applications to move the apps to the SD card no need for a 3rd party app to do it unless you are moving something that shouldn't be moved to SD card. Also EC05 is the latest version for the epic anything newer is a leaked beta.

Yeah, the media scanner is running so no, I did not disable it. I don't even know where or how to disable it. Anyway, I do know you can move things using the "Manage Applications" to move things to the SD card but the point of trying out the 3rd party App2SD apps was to have the program let me know if it will work while running off the SD card. I did notice there are many apps out there that don't like being stored on the external card but others will say if its safe or not even though it doesn't always seem to be the case. Like I said, the 3 apps I did use always seem to say its safe to move it to SD card even though in the apps description in the Android Market might say yes or no to doing so. I was just trying to not have to read the whole description and let an app let me know if it was safe.

I guess the thought of having to go through the App store and download everything again if things should go bad gives me a little bit of cold feet. I guess I'll just have to give it shot again and see what happens now that I know I can unmount SD card. I thought you had to hit that option only if you wanted to physically remove the card like if you had it mounted on a computer. Mac's I know but Android is more PC like and those are waters I haven't travelled down much. Thanks for the quick response.

Jim

Why is anyone using apps to sd app when the stock phone has the ability to do the same thing? You are trying to free up space, so lets just add another space eating app to fix it. Huh???
