No new text message sound when I'm in the app

[Android Central Question]

I get the normal text notification/sound when i'm in another app or the screen is dark, but is there a way to get a sound for incoming texts when the Messages app is on screen? If I send a text and set the phone down, incoming texts are silent. If I'm not looking at the screen I don't know I've gotten a reply. Just came from an iPhone which had this feature and I kind of miss it.

It's normal, but I find it a pain sometimes if I forget to back out of the app. I see the logic for not needing a notification when an app is open but this has caught me out a few times

I haven't had a need for that as I always look at badge counts , but double check notification settings by long press the app tap info and check notification. Also which device and message app you using?

Some messaging apps will give a notification when the app open, some will not.
"Textra" is one of the apps that does give you that option.

Thank you. I'm on Galaxy S10, using stock app, Messages. Overall I'm happier with this than the iPhone but there were a few things (like the in-app text notification) that I miss.

On a related note, another question- when the screen is black and I get a text, it shows up momentarily at the top of the screen then quickly disappears. Any way to modify that, keep it on screen longer, change appearance of it in any way? I haven't found anything.

Not the lock screen, the black screen. I do have edge lighting enabled.

Maybe toggle it off see if it stays longer , if not I'm not aware maybe other members can chime in
