No notifications over wifi when phone asleep

My phone updated to version 5.1.1, and since then I no longer receive push notifications when the phone is connected to wifi but asleep. Waking the phone up - by swiping the screen - activates it and the messages come in. This is particularly a pain in the a$$ because MightyText doesn't work until I wake up the phone.

I have looked through all settings and cannot find a solution:
- power saving mode is off
- 'Keep wifi on during sleep' is set to 'Always'
- I have no battery saving apps on my phone.

it could be an app that you've given notification access to which could be blocking the notifications
