i've been searching for answers to questions that may or may not have been answered before...if they have been i can't seem to find them and i'm sorry if i'm wasting anyones time :-\ but if someone could point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it! :]

my epic is not rooted because i have no idea what that does to a phone, how to do it, or if it can go back to normal after it's been done so i keep my nose out of it for fear of turning my wonderful android phone into a useless brick! >.< i don't understand a LOT of the lingo in some of these topics and i get so confused trying to decode things by looking at other threads, or my phone, or googling them :-\

anyway, i got the over the air froyo update the other day and noticed a few little glitches (screen rotate lagging quite a bit, ringtones jumbled, battery life, etc.) everyone i've talked to says that i need to do a hard reset to fix these little things. please correct me if i'm wrong, but the hard reset is the one that you do by going into the privacy settings and "factory reset" your phone, right? but some other people talk about "flashing" or holding the camera button and the volume button and some menu pops up???

i know that i can re-download the games and apps i got from the market but that wont save my game levels and stuff, right? is there a way that i can save my games AND my levels without rooting my phone? i've tried looking but all i see solutions for are rooted phones and i don't even know how to do that! >.< plus, i'm not so sure i'd like to root it because since i don't quite understand what it does i'd rather not mess with it. lol

thank you! :D

Your correct. The factory reset there will in fact reset your device. You will loose all your data stored on the device. Anything that is on your sdcard will be SAFE. Think of your sdcard as the "safe zone". As far as backing things up, there isn't too much that can be done without rooting your phone and using a root access required application(s) to backup your data/settings.

Of course, you contacts/email/calendar will be okay even with a factory reset because those are stored on Googles servers. Just make sure you sync your Gmail/Calendar/contacts before you perform the factory reset.

thank you paul! :]

looks like i'm going to have to enlist my bf to help me root my phone then because i've played angry birds and slice it way too much to lose my data! (i know, i'm a nerd, sorry) lol he rooted his htc hero so i'm sure he can figure out how to root my epic. (i hope)

once you've rooted a phone can you never go back??? i mean, if i need to root my phone to save my data i'll have to root my phone to upload it too, right? then if i wanted to go back to stock i'd lose that data anyways. i try to avoid the sprint store at all costs but i'm afraid that if i root my phone if i absolutely haveto go there for something they'll kick me out lol

i've been reading the root threads but there's a lot of info to take in. back to hitting the books for me! :]

Well yes you can always go back to complete stock form, but to do that you need to use Odin back to stock. Once you do that you will loose all your data and you can't retrieve that data you saved in say Mybackup Root or Titanium Backup unless your rooted.

Rooting is not a bad thing, I know it sounds scary with the "Void your warranty" and all but that is only if you walk into a Sprint store with your phone rooted. If by chance you do need to have your phone serviced you can simply make your backups then use Odin to restore to factory stock then have your phone serviced. They will never know it was rooted or anything. About the only sign of it being rooted would be backups on your sdcard from MyBackup or Titanium which also can be transfered off your sdcard onto your computer in that event and then replaced once your phone is back in your hands from servicing..

oh! see, i had no idea that once you rooted you could go back to stock if needed. i must have missed or misunderstood that in all the things that i was reading >.< that takes a LOT of my anxieties about rooting away! :] thank you so much for your help paul! :D i'm definitely going to read more on rooting so i can save my data!

hi paul,

i was reading through many of the how to, faq, and root threads and came across one in which you had written [FAQ] Q & A on Rooting/ROMs/Methods

i was wondering since "They are available from the Market in free versions if you are already rooted and then there is the Pro versions which allows you to use them if your NOT rooted" does that mean if i buy one of the PRO versions i would be able to back up my game data without rooting???

thank you so much for all the help you've been! :]

I'm not really sure on that since I've never purchased the Pro versions.. Since Titanium and MyBackup Root both are "root access" required apps I would think you still need to be rooted to use them. The Pro versions usually just unlock more advanced features to make backups and restore more customizable.

Anyone else willing to chime in on this, go right ahead.. I don't claim to know everything.. ;)

ahh poop! lol well, guess i'm gonna have to root to save my games.

thank you everyone! :D

now i just have to read up some more on rooting and decide which way i wanna go with it. i was looking at the second route listed but i'm not sure i want to change my phone that much. i mean, if you take the second route that means you have to install a ROM like bonsai, right? you can't leave it the way it comes cause you're wiping the original ROM out??? how different is bonsai?

Maybe when I rooted I did something wrong- but GETTING root access wipes your phone... I don't know of a way to keep your game data you had BEFORE you ever 1st root.

This is why I just tell my wife if I'm going to finally root her phone she needs to suck it up and lose that data. Better to root sooner than later.

The app+data thing is a giant problem I have with android.

All depends on which route you want to take brandonc. We do have the prerooted/CWM 2.5.1.0 of Froyo EC05 available in two versions. One is a complete wipe using Odin and the other is a NO DATA loss.

[Odin-EC05] Froyo EC05 Prerooted/CWM v2.5.1.0 RFS (Odexed)
