No simultaneous voice and data on the nexus 4 using Straight Talk / AT&T

(Sorry for the roll call in the title but I hope we can get some good discussions about this.)

I'm hoping someone can help with this issue. I dont have simultaneous voice and data on my shiny new Nexus4 on ST ATT. I can talk just fine. I can have data just fine. But I can not use data (not referring to WiFi) while talking. I have tried many APN settings without success. There are other threads that I've read below that dont have permanent solutions:

http://forums.androidcentral.com/ne...424-no-simultaneous-voice-data-nexus-4-a.html

also here (lots of hits, no permanent fix):
No Simultaneous Voice and Data on AT&T - xda-developers

and here (which is especially interesting - lots of hits, no permanent fix):
Issue 40859 - android - NEXUS 4- AT&T (USA) WCDMA Preferred Device cannot maintain a data connection - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting

I live in the Wash DC / metro area and this is really annoying. Neither myself or my wife have had this issue with either of our Galaxy Nexi. She's still on ATT and I'm using mine on ST ATT now but was also using it on ATT without any issues. It appears to not be a problem with ATT. I want to keep this phone, but may give it to my mom (which i dont have a problem doing but originally intended to give her my Galaxy Nexus so I could have the N4) because I didnt realize how much multi-tasking I do while on the phone that requires the use of data (apps, maps, .. etc.) until I bought the N4. Long story even longer, I dont want to go to T-Mobile and also dont know of many choices as to how I can use this phone in the same manner that I use my Galaxy Nexus. Has someone found a fix for this. (Please dont tell me APN's because the 2nd and 3rd threads above prove that is not a permanent solution.) If you have a fix, that allows me to stay with ATT's network (thru ST), then what did you do / find.

Lastly, I spoke to ST (rather TracFone) and was told I'm not supposed to have simultaneous voice and data anyways. I explained not having an issue with the Galaxy Nexus and really dont want to rehash how that conversation went.

I have an N4 on AT&T ST and I've never heard of this problem before but I can confirm that you do actually have the ability to use simultaneous voice and data; the data is just horrifically slow.

During a call my data connection drops to 7.2Mb/s HSDPA where it is normally sitting at 21.6Mb/s HSPA+. I successfully refreshed Facebook, got weather data using the Android weather widget and navigated to a web page; it was all really slow but it worked. So it would appear that when your on a call a portion of the available bandwidth is reserved for your call, which makes sense if you want to actually understand what the person is saying.

As for APN settings, I'm using the recommended ST settings with the exception of the proxy field. I had read that this is used for throttling and when it's filled in i do see my data speed slowed dramatically.

EDIT: To illustrate how horrible the data throughput is when on a call I ran a speed test: 700kbps / 28kbps vs. 5532kpbs / 1558kbps while not on a call.

You said your data is real slow. Are your bars gray while you are still on a call and using data? My bars turn gray which leads me to believe that I have no data. They will change back to blue and I will have data as soon as I get off the phone.

AT&T does not recognize the Nexus 4 as a smartphone, therefore no simultaneous voice and data at the same time. Even when Google decides update to 4.2.2, something to do with AT&T smartphone database and since they don't sell the Nexus 4, its not in their best interest to add it on.

Thanks. I'm guessing this is a non-issue on T-Mobile?

7.2mbps is "horrifically slow" to you?!?!?!

Fact - anything over 3mbps for Web surfing or videos is just bragging rights

Fact - people at sprint would LOVE TO have those speedz

TMO should be fine as they have been selling the Nexus 4, I would be using my N4 handset on ST TMO sim but none to very weak reception in my neck of the woods.

total non issue, I looked up a UPS store while talking on the phone yesterday, no problems

Uhhh....what? Is this a common issue for other ATT usrs? That doesn't make much sense. If you are on an AT&T smartphone plan, it shouldn't make any difference. I ordered my N4 yesterday and I'll be swapping my ATT sim in when I get it. I'll report back...

Sorry, I'm on Straight Talk AT&T SIM. IDK about that one, it might be a good idea to ring AT&T CS to find out.

7.2Mbps is what the channel is rated for, i.e. theoretical max. I get about 5-6M down when it's rated for 21.6Mbps and 700K down when its rated for 7.2Mbps so yes "horrifically slow"

Negative no grey bars. My signal stayed at 2-3 bars the whole time whether I was making a call or not. This sounds like you just have a crappy signal in general, so when you try to access data while on a call your throughput is so low it seems like you don't have a connection. Try using the Network Signal Info app, you can monitor your connection with the widget; if you're constantly below 100dBm your going to have a bad time.

Ah, gotcha. Sorry about that, I misunderstood.

Maybe not common but it has apparently happened to more than a few. Take a look at the links I provided above.

Re: No simultaneous voice and data on the nexus 4 (Jerry / Andrew / Phil / Alex ... Anyone?)

I have the AT&T Straight Talk SIM and can do both voice & data.
But, my normal 300k drops to 139k while on the phone (just tested it)
Wish I'd see faster than 300 in general usage. That's all I've seen since activation.
