No song info on car audio

I've recently changed to android and my car is showing no song information is this an issue with android 8.0? If so, anyone know how to fix it? I have a Sony Xperia xz premium.

What music app are you using? Have you tried it in a different car system? How are you connecting the phone to the car unit? The app you're using is usually the one in charge of what info is sent over to the audio unit, but it could also be a bug with the specific car system or the way you're connecting things.

using either the default music player or Spotify, happens on both. haven't tried a different car. I am connecting to the built in audio unit.

Have you tried removing the pairing from your phone and then re-pair the device and the car unit? Do track controls work or are those not doing it either?
